Source: The Daily Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. March 21, 1890 Friday Work Progressing Fast Pile driving the new No. 4+ dock is progressing rapidly. The contractors, Messers. Henry and Balch, expect to have the dock completed by June 15. Before that time vessels will begin to load ore from it, however, as the superstructure will keep well up with the pile driving, the only cause of delay will be the possible difficulty in getting lumber. Agents of the contract- ors are now traversing the upper peninsula, lower Mi., Wi., and Mn., and are fast purchasing the 6,000,000 feet of dimension tim- ber required for the dock and approach trestle. Of this great quantity, over 4,000,000 feet must be between 20 and 40 feet in length. The dock will rest on over 6,500 Norway piles, some of them 50 feet in length. The improved pile construction, design- ed by Engineer Payne, whereby dead air spaces and consequent rot are avoided, will be used and all fittings will be of the most modern pattern. The chute hoists will be the style used . on the Gladstone dock for the past year, known as the Union Coun- terbalanced. DSS&A Docks SA MStP&SSM Docks
