Source; The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. August 6, 1892 Dr. Northrup Severely Hurt The community was shocked yesterday when it became known that Dr. George J. Northrup, chief surgeon of the DSS&A had received very grave injuries while watching the railroad wreck- ers at work on the derailed coaches near McMillan Sunday morn- ing. The doctor went down Saturday evening in the Superinten- tendent's car to meet Dr. Dawson, who as a surgeon of the road had remained down after the accident to look after Mrs. Lyon, the woman who was so seriously injured by the falling cars while berry picking. They slept in the car at the seene of the erdck that night and in the morning watched for a time the work of the wreckers who had got the sleeper on the rails and were then engaged on the day coache They had a cable attached to the west end of the coach and passed through a block, held by a tree south of the track, to an engine while at the east end a cable was similarly arranged from an engine east of the wreck. Dr. Northrup and Dr. Dawson were near this latter engine, having moved back because they thought the strain on the four inch rope might make the local~ ity dangerous. As the pull commenced the rope between the en- gine and the block attached to the tree was caught by a stump and this fact, caused the trouble. As the strain increased the cable was pulled clear of the stump and sprang back like a bow string. The sudden release causing it to fly back for a second to the other side of the straight line between the en- gine and the tree and in doing so struck the doctor a hard blow squarely across the abdomen. Had he stood nearer to the straight line mentioned he would have been killed on the spot. As it was he suffered severe internal injuries. Dr. Dawson caught him and he was taken to the cars and brought home as soon as possible. Dr. Freund, of Champion and Dr. Vandeventer of Ishpeming were summoned and with the local surgeens of the road are doing all in their power for their injured associate. Last evening the doctor was con- scious and hopes were intertained for his recovery. “DSS&A Passenger
