The officers of the Association elect- ed Saturday are as follows: ’ President—Frank Flagg. Vice Presidents—A. W. Reynolds of wassopolis-and Mrs. Mary Collar of St. Joseph county. Recording Secretary—Miss Margar- et Warren of Cass®polis.- . Financial Secretary—Mrs. F. Moul- throp of Dowagiac. Treasurer—Jack L. Pollock of Do- wagiac. The local Association will work with the Michigan Forestry Association, which is also interested in saving the Newton Woods, which they regard as the finest tract of native timber in the middle west. That the timber will be destroyed if this effort fails, there can be dittle doubt, and when it is gone there is searcely .another tract left in Michigan which will reveal to future generations any idea of what Michi- gan may have been like when the pi- oneers came in here a century ago and began removing the forests in order to | create farms. € Probably the finest whitewood trees in Michigan stand in the Newton Woods, and great oak, elm, maple, beech, basswood, ash, walnut and oth- er trees in so great variety that it is said there are specimens of every kind of native southern (Michigan timber in the Newton tract. It is because so many people hate to see this last good tract of native timbér cut down that in effort is being made-to perpetuate of | Newton Woods. a
