Resolution Adopted March 9, 1935 by the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters Whereas: Newton Woods, a tract of about 400 acres located in Cass County and constituting the most outstanding tract of virgin Forest remaining in southern Michigan, is in imminent danger of destruction by lumbering; and, Whereas: Virgin hardwood forest of the kind found in Newton Woods requires many hundreds of years to grow; and, Whereas: The lumbering of these woods would elimi- nate the habitats of numerous kinds of native plants and animals, and would entail the loss of this remarkable example of Michigan's original hardwood forest; therefore, Be it Resolved: That the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters strongly urges the preservation of Newton Woods as a sanctuary dedicated to the native trees, flowers, and animals of “Michigan; and, furthermore, ae oe . Be it Resolved: That a committee of the Academy be appointed to work with other agencies toward the establishment of this sanctuary.
