At a meeting of the Cass County Historical Society held Feb.,15,1955 it was unanimously voted that this society work to prevent the further cutting down of trees in forest owned by Michigan State College, now known as the " Russ Forest" and that a committee of five be appointed by President to draft resolutions for this purpose, to be submitted at next regular meeting for approval and adoption. The committee so appointed respectfully submits the following: BE IT RESOLVED. lst. That the Cass County Historical Society is tnalterably opposed to plan of Michigan State College of cutting down some of trees now growing in forest and of their plan to leave only ten acres in its present natural state. 2nd. That this society deplores the great injury to natural beauty of forest which was done last winter by the cutting down of many trees. 3d. That this society strongly opposes the cutting down in the future of any tree or trees now standing in forest. ith. That a committee of three be appointed by President to direct activities of our society in our endeavor to preserve forest in all its remaining natural beauty. 5th. That under the direction of said committee,this society use every possible means within its power to persuade authorities of Michigan State College,in deference to wishes of public, to change their plans, and to preserve as it now is,this only remaining forest of its kind, known to us in Michigan or surrounding states. 6th. That this society wishes to express its approval of the work that has been done by college in setting out of trees on land formerly bare,the starting of trees by seed, and the distribution of trees so started, to the public at large. 7th. That this society wishes to express its appreciation of the splendid and painstaking work done by Mr Ingersoll Arnold, the Forester in propagation of trees by seed and for courtesy shown by him and by Mrs Arnold in giving information and in showing points of interest to all visitors to forest.
