Pioneer School, the first constructed in Breitung Township
Photograph of Breitung Township's first school, said to have been built in 1877 by John Lane Buell, the founder of Quinnesec. It was located on the southwest corner of Bluff Street and Paint Street (now U.S. 2). A second story was added in 1879 to accommodate all the pupils. A one-story library, undoubtedly the area's first, can be seen at the back of the photograph., attached to the school by a hallway.
