: Ror NTF FC4 DEATHS Former leader of Flat Rock dies at 80 FLAT ROCK — Charles R. Hammond Sr., 80, a former vil- | lage president, died Saturday in the University of Michigan Hospi- tal, Ann Arbor. He had also served as a city councilman and tax assessor and had been a member of the Charter Commission for the City of Flat Rock, its Zoning Board of Appeals from its inception until 1961, the Senior Citizens Building Advisory Board and on the Board of Review. Friends may call until 9 tonight ’ at Arthur Bobcean Funeral Home, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. David P. Gohn of Community Lutheran Church will officiate and burial will be in Michigan Memorial Park. Born “Feb. 28, 1916, in Napoleon, Ohio, he was the son of Emerson and Carrie (Moore) Hammond. He married’ Helen Matyi in Napoleon, Ohio. An Army veteran, he served dur- ing World War II. He was employed by Mobil Oil, Woodhaven Lube Plant, as a busi- ness manager for 35 years, retiring © in 1976. He was a member of First Unit- ed Methodist Church and Mittle- stat-Smith Post 337, American Legion. He graduated from Flat Rock High School and attended the Uni- versity of Detroit College of Com- merce and Finance for three years. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Charles Jr. and Mark, both of Flat Rock; a daughter, Laura Ham- mond of Oscoda; a brother, Chester of Flat Rock, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert, Forest and Arthur. Memorials may be made toa charity of the donor’s choice or to diabetes research. iia |
