Paul Varg
Paul Varg was born on March 20, 1912. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Clark University and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining MSU in 1958, Varg served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and taught at Ohio State University. At MSU, Varg was instrumental in building the university’s international reputation. He was one of the leading historians on American-Chinese relations and was the first Dean of MSU’s College of Arts and Letters, which was housed in Morrill Hall. He received the University’s Distinguished Faculty award in 1971. Varg retired in 1981 and passed away on February 23, 1994.
