Carole Ames
Carole Ames was a leading scholar in her own right, focusing on the development of social and academic motivation. Ames served as a faculty member at the University of Maryland and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign prior to coming to MSU in 1993. She served for 18 years as Dean of the College of Education at Michigan State University until 2010. During this time, she helped the college become broader and bolder in teaching, scholarship, and research, leading the college to national recognition and high rankings, including the number one ranking in elementary and secondary education graduate programs. At the time of her retirement, she was the longest serving dean among the current dean cohort at MSU. Throughout her long tenure, she was responsible for hiring nearly 70 percent of the college faculty by the time of her retirement. As Dean, Ames also oversaw the establishment of the Office of K-12 Outreach, the Education Policy Center, and the Urban Educators and the Global Educators Cohort Program.
