Erich Fromm
Erich Fromm was born on March 23, 1900 in Frankfurt, Germany. He was educated in Germany at the University of Frankfurt am Main beginning in 1918 and completed his Ph.D. at Heidelberg University in 1922. Prior to coming to Michigan State University in 1957, he lectured at Columbia University, Yale University, National University of New Mexico, and served as chairman of the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology. He was a visiting professor at MSU from 1957 to 1961. Fromm’s known for his theory of human character and theory of human nature. He was known for his social and political commentary as much as for his philosophical and psychological writing and is often viewed as writing some of the founding works related to political psychology. He died on March 18, 1980 in Muralto, Switzerland.
