Gordon E. Guyer
Gordon E. Guyer came to Michigan State University in 1947 to begin studies as a fisheries and wildlife major. He eventually switched to entomology, and led one of the first American scientific groups allowed to visit China in the mid-1970s. Guyer received his bachelor's degree (1950), master's degree (1952) and Ph.D. (1954) all from MSU. He became a MSU faculty member in 1953 and is the author of more than 60 scientific papers, including some used as basic reference material in entomology. Along with serving as a professor, Guyer also held positions as chair of the Entomology Department, director of the Pesticide Research Center, and from 1973 to 1985, director of MSU Extension. On September 1, 1992, Guyer became the 18th president of MSU, serving in that role for two years. Outside of the academy, he held high-level positions at the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and the Kellogg Biological Station. He also served as President of the Entomological Society of America and reviewed programs for the United Nations (FAO) and the Kellogg Foundation in ten countries of Africa and South and Central American. His many honors include receiving MSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 1965.
