Mimi Sayed
Mimi Sayed began her career at Michigan State University in Lyman Briggs College in 1973. She was the first female faculty member in the College and a pioneering woman scientist. Sayed earned her B.S. in agriculture from Cairo University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in botany and plant pathology from Purdue University. During her tenure at Lyman Briggs, Sayed made substantial contributions to curriculum development. She was also an active participant in academic governance at all levels of the university. As a faculty adviser, she helped sponsor the establishment of MSU’s chapter of the Golden Key National Honor Society. She was also active in the American Association for Women in Science and helped promote women’s issues in this and other science-related organizations. As a professor, Sayed was known as a strong and caring instructor who worked closely with many teaching assistants in the biology laboratories.
