Michigan State U ni ver si ty 1996 SENIORS Michigan State * 1 //orni? ci way from home. Michigan State University has long been considered one of the most beautiful places in the State of Michigan, and definitely one of the most incredibly remarkable university proper ties worldwide. The largest land grant univer sity in the United States, MSU has prided itself on the appearance and diversity of its campus. The finest way to do justice to Michigan State University is to describe the sounds, feel ings, smells and visions upon first arrival. Trav elling through the University grounds as a fresh man ranks as the most awe inspiring event of a persons first experiences at MSU. From the first viewing of the many acres of land cover ing MSU, it's not hard to find different pieces of history that have shaped events since the Uni versity was founded in 1855. 'The Rock' out side of the Auditorium which carries all of the messages too important for mere paper and simple print. The pride of the past and future which have and will grace Spartan Stadium, and of course, the treasured and statuesque 'Sparty', who has witnessed every happening on the hal lowed streets that surround him. These land marks, like so many others that remain on cam pus, provided legendary numbers of scholars, administrators, professors and supporters of MSU, the types of memories that you can now create and call your own. In late summer, the grass and bountiful trees are a brilliant green. The sound of the Red Cedar in all her glory, provides the perfect back drop to what will be a canvass of experiences for the new Spartans. The diverse color and beauty of the Botanical Garden, the Beaumont Tower, the buildings lining the Red Cedar and in the people, themselves, who blanket the cam pus at any given moment, are amazing to view. All of these combined, enhances the feeling of warmth welcoming all Spartans to their 'home, away from home'. 2 * Michigan State ~ 4 * Michigan State Michigan State * 5 Michigan State * 7 ‘People and Places I People helping each other toward a common goal. 111 _________ The true strength of Michigan State University is not the Academics, Research, Athletics or any other program that has brought about critical acclaim. The strength lies with the people. MSU has the amazing luxury of being able to pull in people from all walks of life. All colors, religious practices, sexes and ages. The diversity of an Institution like ours is what enables such an establish ment to operate at such a high standard, in so many different capacities. As with anything, you are only as good as the people that surround you. People helping each other towards a common goal. Nothing succeeds or fails by the actions of one person, or one group of people alone. Different factors and ideas need to be together for a com-l mon desire! The desire of a higher edu-l cation. The desire for a better, more edu cated, more competitive and successful world. Michigan State University, with all of its' coals on the fire, is truly a melt ing pot of cultures and beliefs, and a strong attempt at a harmonious union of these to develop what will be an equal opportunity for everyone to reap the re wards. The reward being a better, more rounded society. 8 * Michigan State Michigan State ggpp iüi STÂmt f\ ¡fflSm i '■ a n d (PCaces The strength lies with the people. »¿K V Michigan State *11 eruors Abbott - Aries Julia Abboli Elementary Education Julie Aere Child Development Brian Adams Physiology Rhonda Adams Education Media Adams-Blaekwell Finance Matthew Ajlu ni Political Science Angela Alexander Piolo gy/Education Jennifer Allen Education La nil Ailing Medii al Technology Jason Anderson Idei otnniunii admis Jennifer Anderson Education Sheila Anderson ËÉÊÊÊiÊsSÊIlÊ^ËËÊ. The decision divided the country largely along racial lines. Simpson, who still faced civil suits filed by the families of the victims, vowed to search for the real killer. In six games, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Cleveland Indians for the 1995 World Series title. Braves pitcher Tom Glavine was named the Series MVP. PHOTO—AL BELLO / ALLSPORT OVERVIEW OF EVENTS AND PERSONALITIES OF THE YEAR Citing the stress brought on by two and a half years of legal battles, Shannon Faulkner left the Citadel after only five days. Faulkner, who had fought to be the first woman admit ted to the all-male military school, spent most of her first week in the infirmary, suf fering from heat exhaustion. Retired Gen. Colin Powell toured to support his book, My American Journey, while the country wondered if he would make the run for the presidency in 1996. Powell announced in November that he would not run at this time, but did not rule out any future political endeavors. PHOTO—MIC SMITH / THE POST & COURIER / SYGMA Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in October by a Jewish extremist. In the square where the assassination took place, thousands paid homage to the slain leader. Nearly a million African-American men gathered in Washington, D.C., for the Million Man March, a call for “atonement and reconciliation.” A record 13 years in the making - Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130 consecu tive games played. Many looked at Ripken’s streak as an antidote for fans who were dis gruntled by the recent baseball strike. Rising to meet the challenges of everyday life with enthusiasm and confidence. r/ , ' 111] So many things separate people from one another. The appearance of one indi vidual is not what makes them different from someone else, it is instead what is in side of these individuals that allows their own personal light to shine and create an identity. Often times, this identity is di rectly linked with events in their life that help describe them as people. The unique ness and differences are what shapes char acter, and the character develops into an individuals spirit. In this sense, 'spirit' is referred to as what sets someone apart from everyone else, and later, what is left as the defining memories of that particular indi viduals existence. In regards to a University, of course 'spirit' can be used differently. However, the 'spirit' someone shows towards their college, is strongly determined by the in dividuals' spirit, and their willingness to share those feelings of enthusiasm. Looking around the stadium, Breslin Center, Munn Ice Arena, the ballpark, and the countless fields that em body the athletics at MSU, and hearing the Alumni singing our 'MSU Shadows', is a memory only few people you encounter have experienced, and even fewer have understood. Watching the countless bod ies roll from the classroom to the library, or studying along the Red Cedar, and hear ing the pride and anticipation enveloping the 'spirit' of those undertaking an oppor tunity of higher learning. So many oppor tunities that only those with a firm consti tution, and a fighting spirit will attempt and have the chance to conquer. Rising to meet the challenges of everyday life with enthu siasm and confidence. This is 'spirit'. This is the 'spirit of a Spartan'.® 46 * Michigan State GREEN AND WHITE Michigan State * 47 Saturday 's ai MSU 3 Go GrT~eerr___ Details are sketchy as to when Michigan State ath letic teams officially began using the school colors green and white. But records of the Athletic Asso ciation of the then, Michigan Agricultural College, show that on April 11, 1899, the organization took steps toward adoption of a green monogram, "to be worn only by athletes who subsequently take part in intercollegiate events". On any given Saturday, when a home football game is scheduled, prepare to see over 76,000 fans wearing the 'green and white'. They may never have played football on the field, but they are Spartans in their hearts. ■ 48 * Michigan State ¡■Basasi The student section,...you just wouldn't believe it! Guess you had to be there.
