lating powers. “Almost every packer and can-
ner,” said Mr. Hastings, “puts up two grade
of goods—Standards and Seconds. In the first
grade, nothing but the choicest fruit, fish or

all inferior goods are put up under the other
brand. In some cases, as with “William
Maxwell” peaches for instance, the fruit is
claimed to be equally as large and fine,
the only difference being in the strength
of the syrup used, or a slight shortness in
weight. The first grade goods always bear
the name of the packers, while the second
| grades are put up under the name of a fic-
' titious packer—in other words, the name of
/a man or firm that exists only in imagination.
So Jong as the difference between the two
qualities is kept well in mind, and the
goods are bought and sold with a clear un-
derstanding of the merits of each, there is
no harm to the trade; but when unscrupu-
lous jobbers impose upon their customers by
selling them Seconds as Standards, it is high
time the matter was understood by every
dealer.” Mr. Hastings then opened a can
| of A. Booth & Sons’ raspberries, and also a
| can of the same fruit labeled ‘“D. W. Me-

Nair,’ which is Booth’s second grade.

| Howing with ripe, luscious berries, and the
| syrup was rich, making a dish ready for the
; table. In the latter case, however, the ber-
| yies were small and inferior, some half ripe
'and some over-ripe, the can was but two-
' thirds full, and the syrup was water instead.
| Thisis an average case, and will serve to dis-
| tinguish the difference between the grades
i better than any wordy explanation can do.
| As Mr. Llastings has been engaged in the can-
, ned goods trade for years, and is thoroughly
| acquainted with all the details of the busi-
ness, his conelusions in the matter may be
accepted as absolutely correct.

ANOTHER FRAUD IN THE TRADE.
We learn, says the Baltimore Trade, that,

beans, and that the latter, at least, will be.
sent out as green packed goods. <As much |
of this stock comes to the market when
other and more perishable goods are in sea-
son, a method has been devised of putting
large quantities away in salt, and at this
time, when there is a lull after the regular
packing season, they are taken from the hogs-
‘heads, washed, soaked and packed at an ad-
i vantage, as to opportunity. If the public

fusing to supply them; but the public
should know what they are buying; and
there is, or soon will be, a real disadvantage
to genuine fresh-packed goods if these come
into dishonest competition with them, which
will be the case if these salt-packed beans
are sold for season’s pack. If the packers
want honesty from buyers, they must not
expect the privilege of putting deceitful
goods on the market. It can be accepted as
a principle, that the evil results of every
wrong in the business will eventually have
to be borne by the packers, whether the of-
fense be their own or that of the distribu-
| tors. It is therefore folly to condone de-
|ceitful packing.

and accounts (ealling for $346.40) at $90.65,

The Peninsular Furniture Co. is negotiat-
_ing for the purchase of the late Ford Furni-
: ture Co.’s buildings and plant in the southern

transfer will undoubtedly be made.

| Chas. E. Belknap shipped a ecarload of

{that the timeis not far distant when they
{ will entirely supereede the use of sleighs.
'D. P. Clay ordered a complete outtit of

of snow, he has placed an order for an equal
number of logging carts, which he proposes
to use hereafter, discarding entirely the use
of sleighs. Miehigan lumbermen unite in
‘the opinion that better results acerue from

for work and better service from men are ob-
tained, while the wear and tear on both ani-
‘mals and vehicles are necessarily [ess.

THE FRISKY NEWMANS.

|; The somewhat notorious Newmans are
still absent, and will probably not return to
this Stase for the present. The bankrupt

$3,700. At the recent meeting of the Bos-
ton ereditors, the committee sent West to
investigate the firm’s affairs reported that the
“failure was a fraudulent one and that the
plot to swindle creditors had been carefully
planned and skillfully executed. The goods
were spirited away to different places, but
where has been impossible to determine.”

Mr. Geo. P. Wanty, of Fletcher & Wanty,
the legal firm whieh has been Newman’s
counsel in this case, stated to a reporter of
THe TRADESMAN that ‘“Paisa’” withdrew
his offer of 40 per cent. before it had been
i aeted upon by the ereditors, and is not dis-
posed to make another offer, preferring to let
the creditors take the proceeds of the three
stocks. ‘‘Of course the ereditors will bluster
and blow, and attempt to bulldoze Newman
into paying more, by threatening to prose-
cute him,” said Mr. Wanty, “all of which
will be conducive to much litigation, and
bring money to the peckets of lawyers and
other honest people.” The application of
the word “honest” in this sense is not quite
apparent.

THE ROCKFORD CALAMITY.

The conflagration of Rocktord Monday, by
which two-thirds of the business houses of
the place were swept away, is a severe blow
to that place, and to the men deprived of
their stocks. ‘They all promise to survive,
however, and most of them are taking steps
to resume business as soon as suitable build-
ings can be erected. Although some are in
a bad way financially, it is thought that suit-
able arrangements can be made with credit-
ors in all eases.

pects of the venture. “I kiow-that the fur-
niture business is dull and that the pros-
| peets ave not the best,’ suid Mr. Daniels,
“but L elaim that we can make farniture at
Newaygo cheaper than it can be made here.
We ean get our lumber for 25 per cent. less,
and with no teaming, as it is made within a
‘few yards of the factory, and conveyed
| thereto on a tramroad. Then our motive
| power is water, which is necessarily less ex-

pensive than steam. ‘The factory lies along-
' side of the railroéad, so there is no teaming
‘there. Again, we have secured advanta-
+ geous freight rates to Grand Rapids, and
| propose to ship to this point by carload lots,
| keeping a full stock at a warehouse’ the lo-
'eation of which is yet to be determined.
' This will of course necessitate the opening
| of a sample room somewhere in the business
| center of the city, which has been partially
arranged for. The main office will be here,
and all the selling and business done here.”

 

NEW ENTERPRISE AT HART.

W. H. HT. Walker, formerly superiniend-
‘ent for the late firm of H. 8S. Smith & Co.,
' but latterly foreman of the Grand Rapids
Wheelbarrow Works, is organizing a stock
| company to opeatart at Hart, the intention be-
‘ ing to make nothing but wheelbarrows. It is
| proposed to effect an organization with a
i noimnal capital stock of $20,000, although it
is thought that $15,000 will be an ample
amount to erect necessary buildings, pur-
chase machinery and furnish working capital.
| Of this sum, $10,000 has already been pledg-
ed, and Mr. Walker is confident that the
remainder of the stock ean be placed advan-
,tageously within the next fortnight. ‘The
location proposed is on the line of the rail-
way, and the motive power will be steam.
The capacity of the works will be 20,000
| barrows per year, ready market for whieh is
| found at St. Louis, Mo. It is elaimed that
| the advantage gained in buying lumber at
| first hands, and the saving in transportaion,
as well as the lessened expense incident to a
small town, will enable the company to turn
out manufactured goods much cheaper than
they could at more southern points.

Echoes of the Late Failures.

| ‘'Phese who are in a position to know claim

| that Kellogg, Sawyer & Co. will net pay to
exceed 30 per cent., and may not pay more

| Several of the local creditors of Wetzel!

Bros. do not propose to put their claims into

| the hands of the assignees, but hold them

‘ against the inselvents, hoping thereby to ef-
| fect a more satisfactory settlement than the
| assignees can make.

| It has been determined that a considera-
ble part of Rice & Messmore’s assets is
worthless, or comparatively worthless, finan-
cial paper, and it is thought that ereditors
will not realize 50 per cent., and possibly
not to exceed 40 per cent.

 

J. H. Thaw, the grocery broker, leaves to-
night for New York, where he will spend a
week or ten days in pursuit of business and
pleasure. In this connection, it is not amiss
‘ to state that to Mr. Thaw is due the credit of
introducing Bixby’s blacking and_ polish to
the trade of Western Michigan. Two years
ago none of these goods were used here,
whereas at present every dealer keeps them

how or other, a wreck on the lakes fades out}

Under existing circumstances, a man in|
business cannot exercise too great caution in
all his transactions. Wholesale merchants,
although keenly eumpeting with one another,
are less inclined to grant unlimited credit
than at any time heretofore. The men
whose trade is most eagerly sought after are
those who pay cash or buy on short time and
meet their bills promptly. They have the
tirst choice, and instead of asking favors of
the wholesaler, the latter does all in his
power to oblige them.

Even the man who does only a small busi-
ness, if he pays promptly, has an advantage
in buying which his fellow-trader who keeps |
a large store but is. slow to pay does not.
possess. It is not absolutely mecessary that a,
man should possess large capital in order to |
purchase cheaply. A good reputation and | |
sound business qualities go a long way in.
one’s favor.. The man who is possessed of |
ample capital may be led into investments |
other than his regular business, and in this’
way incur losses ‘that may swamp him en-!
twely. His proper business may be prosper- |
ous and well-conducted, and yet he may be
sinking all he earns in unwise speculations. '
As soon as it leaks out that he is not confin-
ing himself to one line, the merchants who
sell to him are likely to exercise great cau-
tion in their dealings with him. On the}
other hand, the man who sticks to his busi-|
ness, and acts uprighktly will gain confidence, |
and his increased facilities of purchase will
enable him to buy cheaper and sell cheaper.

The man who buys on eredit never thor-,
oughly realizes his position until he recog-|
nizes the fact that he is merely a. trusted.
agent. He is, so to speak, the guardian of
the goods in his possession. His ownership.
begins only on the day the goods are paid |
for. Until that time they are merely en-|
entrusted to his care to sell for the mutual |
benefit of himself and the wholesaler om

IN THE CITY.
D. J. MeCargle, of Roxana, who was re-|
cently burned out, was in. town this week. |
He is preparing to rebuiid, but will not re- |
engage in business until Spring. :
W.H. Knight, the Kent City druggist, |
proposes to remove his stock to this city, |
and engage in the drug and grocery business.
on the corner of Straight street and Butter-
worth avenue.

The Grand Rapids Wheelbarrow Works
turned out 15,000 barrows from Dee. 1, 1882, |
to Dee. 1, 1883, and during that time disposed
of 20,000 barrows, nearly exhausting the sur- |
plus stock. The company has now on hand
about 9,000 barrows. Two hundred dozen
snow shovels are in process of manufacture.

Ritchie & Gorham, who have lately carried |
on a retaii grocery business on a small scale
at 35 Broadway, the former location of the
defunct firm of J. H. Zoet & Co., have dis-
solved partnership, R. M. Gorham retiring. |
Mr. Ritchie has closed the store, and propos-
es shipping the stock to Lansing, and re-en-_
gaging in trade at a small settlement south :
of that place. :

Christian Bertsch, of Rindge, Bertsch & |
Co., returned Saturday from a fortnight’s |
tour among the shoe manufacturing centers
of the East. He states that the manufactur- |
ers were at first inclined to regard the com-|
plaints of “hard times” by Western buyers |
as of a somewhat chronic nature, but are be- |
ginning to realize that there are real grounds |
for complaint.

Alex. Collins, of the Hillsdale Canning |
Co., was in the city Jast week,, introducing |
the goods of his establishment. Despite the |
poor year for apples and tomatoes, the com-
pany has put up 25,000 cans ot tomatoes, |
20,000 cans of pumpkins, 50,000 cans of ap!
ples, besides a large quantity of corn, beans,
peas, pears and small fruit. The tomatoes |
were sold in advance to Franklin MacVeagh |
& Co., of Chicago, who contracted for 30,-!
000 cans. |

John Monroe, Sr., general dealer and saw
mill owner at South Arm, has made an as- ;
signment to Henry E. Harmon. His prop-'
erty was previously attached for $7,000.

H. T. M. Treglown, formerly Treglown & ;
Knox, Caledonia, proposes removing his |
stock to Lowell in January, where he will |
continue in business, carying a general line.

Geo. Thompsett, who was burned out at
Edgerton Friday for the second time, states |
that he will not resume business. He was |
insured for $3,600, which will just pay his)
liabilities, leaving him nothing.

STRAY FACTS.
Detroit wilt start a nail-factory.
The threshing-machine works of the new)
Battle Creek Co. have just started.
During the past year the Michigan Stove’
Co. at Detroit has turned out 65,000 stoves, |
valued at $1,300,000.
The Elk Rapids Chemical Co. is now mak- |
ing 150 gallons of wood alcohol and 122,000 ;
pounds of acetate of lime per day.
The Pembroke Knitting Co. at Muskegon |
propose to erect a new factory building on |
Jefferson avenue, their present quarters be-.
ing too small.
There is a merehant doing business at St.
Clair, who, until a recent illness, had not |
been kept away from his place of business |
by sickness a single day in 30 years.
The pump works at Three Rivers, long |
idle, will probably be taken by a company
now organizing to manufacture the potato
digger and planter invented by Mr. Aspin-|
wall, of that place.
The Kirk soap box factory, at Muskegon,
has manufactured 335 car loads of boxes so
far this year, and they have been shipped to
the house at Chicago. A car load averages
3,000 boxes, which.shows the total number
of boxes manufacturered to be 1,005,000. |
Cadillac Néws: Lively times may be ex-
pected before spring opens, even if we are
not at present enjoying as lively a trade as
in former years. We are informed that one |
of our mills lias orders to fill that will keep}
them busy until spring opens, and others are |
enjoying their usual prosperity.
A fdetory where they adulterate butter |
with lard and other ingredients, so that it)
makes the unhealthiest kind of oleomargar- |
ine, has been discovered in full blast a little |
way out from Battle Creek. They have made |
several tons of it each month and what has |
not been sold in Battle Creek has been ship- |
ped away.
Dr. A. W. Jenkins, who has disgraced the |
medical fraternity of the State for several |
years past, and who will be a standing re-|
proach to any community with which he;
identifies himself, has taken French leave |
of Reed City, it having been discovered that |
he had performed a criminal abortion, which |
subsequently resulted in the death of the vic- |
tim. All reputable physicians will rejoice |
at his summary departure, only regretting |
that he could not have been apprehended and '
made to pay the penalty for murder.

Mancelona Herald: We are glad to an-

‘nounce that the Mancelona lron Furnace

will, in a very short time, be ready to go in-
to blast. In rebuilding the furnace no ex-
pense has been spared, and now, with its ad-

‘ ditional kilns, new hoisting engine, double

elevator and mammoth stock room, and be-
ing larger and better built, it is superior in
every way to what it was betore the fire. Mr.

going out of blast. The new eoal burners
are from the Bangor furnace, and have had
many years experience in burning charcoal.

Alabastine is the first and only prepara- ,
tion made from calcined gypsum rock, for |
application to walls with a brush, and is |
fully covered by our several patents and |
perfected by many years of experiments. |
It is the only permanent wall finish, and |
admits of applying as many coats as de-
sired, one over another, to any hard surface
without danger of scaling, or noticeably
adding to the thickness of the wall, which
is strengthened and improved by each ad- |
ditional coat, from time to time. It is the
only material for the purpose not dependent
upon glue for its adhesiveness ; furthermore
it is the only preparation that is claimed
to possess these great advantages, which
are essential to constitute a durable wall
finish. Alabastine is hardened on the wall
by age, moisture, etc.; the plaster absorbs
the admixtures, forming a stone cement,
while all kalsomines, or other whitening
preparations, have inert soft chalks, .or
glue, for their base, which are rendered
soft, or scaled, in a very short time, thus
necessitating the well-known great incon-
venience and expense, which all have ex-
perienced, in washing and scraping off the
old coats before refinishing. In addition
to the above advantages, Alabastine is less
expensive, as it requires but one-half the
number of pounds to cover the same amount
of surface with two coats, is ready for use
by simply adding water, and is easily ap-
