Well that was fun……. Pardon my sarcasm but June, July and August never seem to get any easier in the golf course maintenance industry. With the many challenges that occur during the hot summer months, maintaining a golf course always seems to require your undivided attention at all times. It is a period of time that limits your expo- sure to the outside world. At least for me it does so it is nice to be able to spend a few minutes here to say hello and reengage with the Association. Whether it’s your family, friends, coworkers or fellow Superintendents and Affiliates, this pseudo disconnect is welcomed by the cooler nights and the late August sunsets not to mention pre season football. We are not out of the woods yet by any means and there is still much work to do but it is certainly nice to feel like you can breathe again. That may be an overstatement but for me there is some truth. As the heat of the summer declines so does the pressure in the workplace which hopefully frees up more time for personal matters and well being. It seems to be the case as we begin our early planning for next year only to do it all over again! I’m not trying to be funny here but it is the nature of the business. The good news is that we will soon have plenty of time to commiserate amongst each other and compare successful coping mechanisms that got us through. For me, I try to keep a good mind set, stay prepared and take one step at a time as I struggle with fatigue while the days pile up. Along with this good news comes the professional resiliency that we exhibit every day, an accomplishment that we should be proud of. The passion required is unwavering. I hope this note finds you well and you are moving into the late summer with better days ahead and I look forward to seeing you in the upcoming months. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any member of the Board with any questions or concerns. Kent qualified for this year’s Massachusetts Sr. Amateur Championship. The event will be played September 5-6 at Hopkinton Country Club, where GCSANE Member Justin Gagne is Superintendent. This year we were again represented by GCSA of New England Member, Kevin Corvino, and his nephew Rocco Motroni in the Ouimet Sprint. This was the 16th year that Kevin has represented us and Rocco’s third as the fundraisers for Ouimet Scholarships. He and Rocco played at Unicorn Golf Course in Stoneham, MA where GCSANE Member Patrick Van Vleck, CGCS is superintendent. Rocco, left and Kevin Due to a shoulder injury this year’s roles were reversed. Rocco was the player and Kevin was the caddie. We are fortunate to have Kevin and Rocco devote their time to this event. Kevin is a Ouimet Scholar and believes in supporting an organization that supported him. He also contributes his time interviewing applicants applying for scholarships. Kevin and Rocco’s participation is very important to help raise scholarship funds for the young men and women working in golf across Massachusetts. Please keep in mind, some of the scholarship recipients work on courses managed by members of the GCSA of New England. If you would like to learn more about the event or make a donation, please click this link. The UMass Field Day, July 19, had a large attendance. The weather was warm and sunny as participants toured research projects at the UMass Dr. Joseph Troll Turfgrass Research Facility in South Deerfield, MA. A wide range of topics were covered including glufosinate as a glyphosate alternative, bentgrasses for better winter survival, using NTEP data for easy access to turfgrass selection data, fungicide combinations for dollars spot control, and a number of other topics of interest. Companies that support our industry were present to exhibit their products and answer questions. The entire facility was in great shape and all was presented in a first-class manner. Congratulations 4 to the UMass Turf Program faculty and staff for their hard work and continuing contributions to our industry. The June meeting was held at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, MA. Our hosts were Andrew Lamy, Superintendent and Ken Munsey, General Manager. The low gross winners were Matt Lapinski and Bob Dembek. They had a gross best ball score of 64 = -8. Low net winners were Patrick Van Vleck and Greg Bennett. They had a net score of 60 = -12. Usually, I would have photos accompanying this, but I was unable to attend because of a bout with COVID. This year’s Scholarship and Benevolence (S&B) tournament will be held at the Concord Country Club, Tuesday, October 10. Our host will be Peter Rappoccio, CGCS, Superintendent. We have been fortunate to have support from our Friends, Affiliates and Members for this event. Since 1995 the total scholarship amount awarded has been $226,750.00. Benevolent aid distributed has been $167,200.00. While these have been generous amounts, needs continue and we are always looking for ways to increase participation in the annual fundraiser, which is the S&B Tournament. There will be information sent to you that will include ways to support this important event. If your child has benefitted from the S&B Fund you might want to consider a donation to help pay it forward for those who may be in a similar circumstance with their future. The benevolence side of the S&B also lends a helping hand to those in need. This year’s US Open Championship had a connection with one of our members. Bob DiRico, a past president of the Association and former superintendent at Brae Burn Country Club was responsible for the reconstruction of the Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course in preparation for the championship. Bob was the construction manager employed by Hawk Shaw Golf Course Construction. His duties included supervising and making certain the work done was to the level specified by architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Last year I had the good fortune to meet Dan Catterson, Superintendent of LACC’s North Course and his wife Lora Beth, who was volunteering during the US Open at The Country Club. Lora Beth is the Assistant Director of Agronomy at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. Bob and Dan swapped a few stories about the work done and course conditions during championship week. Tom Ackley and Bob Matthews attended but due to the rain delay and schedule change they arrived after the photo was taken. The August meeting was held at Marlborough Country Club, August 15. Adam Bennett is the first-year Superintendent at the club and is enjoying his time in spite of the record-setting wet year. Even with the crazy weather, he and Assistant Superintendent Shaun Allen and their team had the course in wonderful condition. The day of the event started off with light rain that grew heavier after play started. The round was suspended for 90 minutes, which required a change in the day’s schedule. Because of this we were unable to present the crystal bowl to the 2023 DSA recipient, Sharon Brownell. We will try to do this at a later date. When 5 4 May - June 2023 Thoughts (continued) the rain stopped, play resumed with a 9-hole shotgun. After golf, lunch was served, announcements were made and recognition of the Association’s retirees took place. Brief biographies of each were read. It’s always nice to recognize those on whose shoulders we are carried. Each retiree contributed to our profession and industry, and we owe them recognition for moving us forward. I would like to offer a special thanks to Adam and his staff for being so easy to work with and helpful during the “on the fly” changes needed because of the rain. Greg Farland, Golf Professional was very helpful figuring out the format changes. Charlotte Hillery, GM; and Stephanie Andrade, Director of Sales and Events and their teams went out of their way to change the lunch and meeting plans because of the wet weather. This meeting was also the qualifier for the New England Superintendents Championship that will be played at the Pt. Judith Country Club in Narragansett, Rhode Island, Monday, October 2. Anytime you work up a sweat, your body loses some of the fluid that keeps it hydrated. That depletion puts you at risk for dehydration, which means replenishments are vital. Drinking plenty of water is the obvious solution, but if you can get your hands on some H2O that’s been fortified with electrolytes, even better. Why are electrolytes important? The term “electrolytes” has become some- thing of a buzzword in the fitness and health space. You’ve likely heard of them from a trainer or wellness enthusiast, but what are electrolytes and what do they do for the body? To put it simply, leading functional med- icine physician Bindiya Gandhi, M.D. tells mindbodygreen that electrolytes are a category of electrically charged essen- tial minerals the body both produces and derives from food and beverages. Minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, phos- phate, chloride, and sodium are all exam- ples of important electrolytes. According to Gandhi, electrolytes are vital to sustaining a healthy body and mind as they “balance our fluid levels, maintain our blood pH, help to keep our muscles, nerves, heart, and brain cells working, help to transport nutrients to our cells, and excrete toxins out of our cells.” In other words: They’re more than post-workout fuel. 5 signs your body needs more electrolytes In the same way your body lets you know if you aren’t getting enough protein, fiber, or virtually any macro or micronutrient in your diet, when your body needs electro- lytes, it’s going to send out an SOS. These are the top five signs your body needs more electrolytes, according to experts. Sign #1: Your muscles are weak or cramping. Electrolytes aid in proper muscle function, so if you’re experiencing muscle weakness and/or muscle cramps1, registered dietician 12 13 The Newsletter your body needs more electrolytes. “A lot of runners I’ve worked with have experienced nausea at the end of or after runs,” Landes notes. “We’ve worked on adding more sodium before, during, and after runs to alleviate it. Sign #4: Your sodium levels are down. In severe cases of an electrolyte deficit, Landes says some might experience hyponatremia, a condition of low sodium. “This can happen if someone is drinking plenty of fluids but not replacing the sodium lost through sweat,” Landes explains. However, hyponatremia is a serious medical condition, one Landes says could cause lethargy, mental confusion, nausea, muscle weak- ness, “and in very severe cases, even death.” If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to talk to your doctor. Sign #5: Your heartbeat is abnormal. If you needed any more proof that electrolytes are vital to your health and wellness, this is it. According to functional medicine registered dietitian and women’s health specialist Sam Schleiger MS, CLT, IFNCP, electrolytes such as potassium and calcium play a major role in maintaining proper heart rhythm, and an imbal- ance can lead to “irregular heart rhythms, palpitations, or a rapid heartbeat.” Schleiger warns, “Severe electrolyte imbalances can even pose seri- ous risks to heart health,” so you want to make sure your electrolyte levels are at their most optimal, at all times. Check in with your doctor if you’re unsure about yours. 3 ways to get more electrolytes Here are three easy ways to make sure you’re regularly getting enough electrolytes. Enhance your plain H2O: Don’t have a bottle of electrolyte-forti- fied water in your fridge? No worries. Gandhi explains that getting more electrolytes in is as easy as adding salt to your water with a squeeze of lemon or reaching for coconut water (which is naturally rich in electrolytes) instead. Eat an abundance of whole foods: Physician and healthcare educator Kelvin Fernandez, M.D. stresses the importance of a well-rounded diet rich in fruits and vegetables when your body is craving more electrolytes. “Avocados, bananas, and spinach are fantastic sources of potassium, while foods like almonds and tofu can provide you with your daily dose of magnesium,” Fernandez explains. “Our everyday diet is an excellent source [of electrolytes] and Mother Nature has us covered.” Take a supplement: Nobody’s perfect. Some days, you’re not reach- ing for fruits and vegetables or you’d rather save a few bucks than splurge for the pricy fortified bottles. To make up the difference and ensure you’re getting some electrolytes in, Schachter says there are plenty of electrolyte supplements available—like tablets, pow- ders, and capsules—that can be added to water or other beverages. 12 13 May - June 202324/7 ONLINE ORDERINGOrder from your car, your home or a job site, using any device, any time, even when the branch is closedINSTANT ACCESS TO YOUR PRICINGBuild quotes or simply find the best pricing that is customized to you and stays currentREAL-TIME PRODUCT AVAILABILITYAccess inventory status across thousands of products, not just in your branch, but anywhere in our branch networkCONVENIENT PICKUP, SHIPPING OR DELIVERYPickup at your favorite branch or have your order sent directly to your home or job siteONLINE BILL PAY AND INVOICESWhether you order at the branch or online, have one place where you can see all your invoicesCLICK CLICK Assistant Superintendent Spotlight: Dan Peterson, Assistant Superintendent Pocasset Golf Club Presented by Ryan Boudreau, Assistant Superintendent Framingham Country Club Introduction by Dan Peterson: My first job at a golf course was setting up chairs for weddings at White Cliffs Country Club. Followed by my second gig dressing up as an elf at White Cliffs Country Club. My mom was Santa. A photo exists, you could not torture the location of it out of me. As the son of a single mother/bartender, I have been making myself look busy on a golf course my entire life. I began working at Pocasset Golf Course during high school in 2005, working seasonal full time until 2014. Full-time year-round jobs are hard to come by on Cape Cod, so from 2014-2018 I left the industry to run a butcher shop/deli. In 2018 my old boss Steve Carr (42 years Super @PGC retired 2019) called with an offer; come back full time, go to Winter School, get a pesticide license, and he would make me the 2nd assistant. I have been at Pocasset ever since. I live a few miles down the road from the course, and love everything Cape Cod has to offer. There is nothing better than getting off work on the weekend and heading down to the beach to do some shellfishing. I also enjoy photography, and with the abundance of people and wildlife, there is always something interesting to take photos of. Q. Dan, thank you for taking the time to participate in our ongoing Assistant Spotlight series. What sparked your interest in starting a career in the golf course industry? A. Thank you for choosing me! Golf has been a lifelong passion for me. I grew up in a golfing family, my mom worked weekends at private courses, and I learned to play the game from a very young age. I always found myself drifting back to the game, wishing for a way to make it a life. Unfortunately it was clear from an early age that golfing professionally was not going to be the path. Even during the time I was working in the deli, I remember thinking, “the worst day on the golf course was better than my best day here”. I understand the game, and our role in it, and appreciate the fact that there is always something new to learn. This is the most content I have been with my work life. Q. Who were/are your mentors and what are some things that you will take from them as you continue your career? 14 A. I am closing in on 15 years on a golf course, and I am incredibly lucky to have worked with the same group of guys during that time, with the exception of Steve Carr retiring and Jon Burke taking his place as Superintendent. I would say every single person, in one fashion or another, has mentored me and taught me everything I know about maintenance and the wider world beyond. Jon, Steve, Jeff, Stevie G, Mike, Brian, Pete and Mark have watched me grow from a summer kid to an assistant over the years and I would not be where I am today if not for their guidance, encouragement and sometimes yelling at me. Q. Some people may better know you as “The Greenskeepah” on X, formerly Twitter. Could you shed some light on some of the things you have been doing to help build your brand and what are some of your goals as you expand your reach outside of our colleagues? A. X is a great tool for connecting with other people in the turf industry and adjacent markets. Instagram has been the best for connecting with people from the consumer side of golf. Now you can find @thegreenskeepah across all sites posting a variety of content. It has been a lot of fun, I have interacted with people from around the world while learning and absorbing things I never would have thought to try. It’s led to some great opportunities, the largest of which is partnering with another brand (@capecodgolfguys www.capecodgolfguys.com) to put on golf tournaments across the Cape. We started with a sponsored tournament at Pocasset, The Cod’r Classic, named for the sponsoring company, Cod’r Craft Cocktails. That has run each year, as well as a tournament on Martha’s Vineyard at Royal and Ancient Chappaquiddick Links. There is also a tournament for brands and creators held at Plymouth Country Club earlier in the year for people to make connections and plan content for the summer. We have a secret tournament in the works for this fall, so keep an eye open! Additionally I was lucky enough to get in early with a company that makes online pro shops for golf courses (Tee Commerce), and 15 The Newsletter can drain massive puddles. The course is in year 2 of 3 for a phragmites mitigation project in one of our ponds. Q. Do you have a favorite job/task you like to perform while you are at work? A. I stand firm that a tractor is the most fun piece of equipment to use on and off a golf course. Although, if I had to pick one job to do, it would be walk-mowing greens. I am a stripe fanatic that lives and breathes to put down perfect lines across a green. Q. Other than Pocasset, what are some your favorite courses you’ve been able to play? A. My favorite round was earlier this year at Essex County Club. I opted to have a caddy and it was hands down the best round of my life. The caddy, Mike, was the most knowledgeable and helpful guy I could’ve imagined, and it really elevated the round above the rest. The grounds were immaculate, Eric and his team do continued next page they built me a website to sell merchandise www.thegreenskeepah.com. I have spent the last few years teaching myself photography/video editing to make better and more relatable content, photoshop to create logos and other digital media. Q. What are some challenges you have experienced in your career that you may not have expected when you first started out? A. Teenagers. Wrangling teenagers. It’s much more work than I initially gave it credit for, however it is something I have truly come to enjoy. Q. Do you have any capital projects lined up at Pocasset in the near future? A. Next August we break ground on a Rainbird IC System, shoutout Paul Roche from Golf Water for helping the process run smoothly. Tanto will be doing the install and Northeast Nurseries will be fielding all of our questions (Looking at you Dan and Dan). Plenty of irrigation work has gone into this in the recent past, namely a new well and pump replacements. We are in the middle of a multi-stage cart path project, removing asphalt and replacing it with trail mix. We are addressing a variety of drainage issues across the course, from greens drainage to horizontal tunnels that SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR EQUIPMENT NEEDS! Hyannisport, another beautiful course, was a longtime bucket list item that I got to play last year. I’m looking forward to getting more involved with the association so I can see more courses! Q. You have the opportunity to play any course with anyone. Where are you play- ing and who is in your dream foursome? A. Martha Stewart and my wife in one cart, myself and Snoop Dogg in the other. Playing a 4 person scramble at Cape Arundel Golf Club. Q. What would you like to see change within our industry, in particular how it pertains to Assistant Superintendents? A. My wife is a psychotherapist, so I recognize the importance of maintaining overall mental health. I see a lot of burnout within the industry both above and below the level of assistant. Workers are more productive when there is a good work/ life balance. Mistakes happen when this balance is thrown off. I have no immediate solution to this problem, but I see it as something that requires the attention of the industry. I’ve included this article because most members of the GCSA of New England never met Arthur and therefore their only exposure to him would be from reading pages of archived issues of The Newsletter or reading an article like this. I had the good fortune to be the superintendent at Weston Golf Club during Arthur’s retirement years and spoke for many hours with him about his career and life experiences at Brae Burn. I always looked forward to his visits to Weston to talk with him. Arthur helped our I believe it’s important to know the history of our profession and realize how far our industry and profession has progressed. While some may snicker when shown old photos of how some maintenance practices were performed, it’s important to realize those practices, though primitive by today’s standards, were trailblazing at the time and an important part of our evolution. The Anderson Cup after members, but not all. Our oldest tour- nament, going back to 1900, is named after Arthur Anderson, our superintendent from 1935-1965. A great golf course can only live up to its potential when in the hands of a great greenkeeper, and we therefore honor this man’s decades of valuable contribution with the Anderson Cup. Arthur began his greenkeeping career along with his brother Ted at the Alpine Golf Course in Fitchburg, after which both came to Brae Burn around 1930 to work under the talented John Shanahan. Ted moved on to Ellinwood Country Club in Athol, but Arthur remained at Brae Burn for the balance of his life, living with his wife in an apartment attached to a maintenance build- ing near the pond behind The Rink. Winter School of Greenkeepers at the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now UMass), studying under Professor Lawrence S. Dickinson, a pioneer in the teaching of turf management. This was the first and for many years the only such program in the country, and as the degrees were award- ed alphabetically, Arthur Anderson had the distinction of being the first student to have graduated from this prestigious organization. Arthur was a close friend of Al Radko, the first National Director of the USGA Green Section, and was considered by the USGA to be an authority on grasses, particularly bent grass and Poa Annua, the fine grasses we still play at Brae Burn. These grasses are today considered by discerning superintendents to provide some of the best greens in the world. Before his tenure at Brae Burn, Arthur was one of seven members of the first graduating class from the Stockbridge Arthur’s tenure reflects the changing approach to golf course management, applying science and the shared techni- Arthur Anderson was the tournament photographer at the 1975 USGA Women’s Amateur Many Brae Burn tournaments are named 20 21 The Newsletter cal knowledge that we take for granted today. But he knew the importance of having a feel for the course. Members remember his walking the course the way a player walks the course—from tee to green. He continued to walk the course the same way after his retirement, observing the work of his successor, Robert Grant. Occasionally he would drive around the course in a small truck (never a golf cart) which he kept in third gear even at slow speeds, to the consternation of anyone who was with him. Arthur was so highly regarded by professionals in his trade that the Golf Course Superintendent Association of New England (GCSA of NE) established a tournament in his name in 1968, inviting superintendents along with the press to better acquaint the golf scribes with the language of turf management. Arthur was always on hand to present the trophy. The August, 1969 newsletter of the GCSA of NE describes the event as follows: “The day was com- pleted with . . . the presentation of the Arthur Anderson Trophy to the winning team. Sir Arthur was there in all his orange-trousered splendor. ‘I wouldn’t miss this one for the world,’ said he.” Don Hearn, the current Executive Director of the GCSA of NE, got to know Arthur well during the latter’s retirement years. Don was superintendent at Weston CC at the time, and Arthur would stop by to chat with him — and then nap in the lunchroom at the Weston maintenance facility for a few hours in a cozy chair. It was more than respect that caused Don and his crew to work around Arthur quietly while he was dozing so as not to disturb his rest. Don describes Arthur as the dean of superintendents in the New England area (“If Arthur was doing something at Brae Burn, you’d take notice”), but also as an unassuming man with no ego to pro- tect; simply a nice and gentle person, approachable and well-liked by all who met him. Don recalls thinking that if he could ever have adopted a grandfather, it would have been Arthur. The Brae Burn Heritage Committee For golf course construction, renovation and repairs.
