T h e gene r a l title of t h e t a l k was, " W h a t ' s a H e a d in G r e e n k e e p i n g ? " H e r b t h e n said t h e a n s w e r w a s only p a r t l y — A s pirin and H e a d a c h e s . O t h e r p e a r l s of wisdom, as g a t h e r e d by this r o v i n g r e p o r t e r , a r e : In n o line of golf has t h e r e been such a d v a n c e s as with t h e greenkeeper; greenkeepers have made use of knowledge. B u t t h e r e has been no a d v a n c e in t h e g r e e n k e e p e r ' s salary, t h e r e a s o n p a r t l y has been t h a t clubs in g e n e r a l have had a t o u g h time, b u t now some have d r u n k t h e m s e l v e s into some prosperity. Green c h a i r m e n s h a r e f a t e of t h e g r e e n k e e p e r s ; if g r e e n c h a i r m e n got paid b y clubs f o r t h e i r t i m e a t same r a t e as t h e y g e t paid a t their businesses t h e clubs would be in hock. T h e G r e e n chairman shares abuse with the greenk e e p e r f o r no d o u g h ! T h e two of t h e m a r e n o t g e t t i n g t h e a p p r e c i a t i o n and u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e y should f r o m average m e m b e r s of clubs. Charles River t h i n k s a lot of F r a n k Wilson, b u t this h a p p e n s seldom a t clubs. In past fifteen y e a r s g r e e n k e e p e r s have devoted t i m e to p l a n t science, in t h e f u t u r e a t t e n t i o n m u s t be paid to m e n in connection with t h e b u d g e t . G r e e n s m e n a r e o f t e n laid off d u r i n g t h e W i n t e r season, and even m u s t go on r e lief in some cases; t r y to g e t m e m b e r s to employ these m e n d u r i n g t h e W i n t e r season. It is n o t a good reflection on a golf club to have its good w o r k e r s s t a r v i n g d u r i n g t h e W i n t e r season. T h e a v e r a g e m e m b e r h a s no idea w h a t it is all a b o u t . In m o s t cases t h e e d u c a t i o n a l c o n t a c t of m e m b e r w i t h G. K. is t h e a n n u a l r e p o r t a n d t h e signs on t h e b u l l e t i n b o a r d of "Winter R u l e s " , " T e m p o r a r y g r e e n on 3", or " d o t h i s " or " d o n ' t do t h a t " with n o w h y or w h e r e f o r e . E d u c a t i o n should r e a c h o u t to m e m b e r s t h r u Bulletin B o a r d s w i t h e x p l a n a t i o n of a n y causes f o r such signs. B o a r d s should also include r e a s o n s f o r m e t h o d s on t h e golf course, as w h y t o p d r e s s , etc. A p r o b l e m , seriously neglected, is that Greenkeepers are the world's lousiest press a g e n t s . (In N e w E n g l a n d t h e r e is less a n n u a l t u r n over of Green C h a i r m e n t h a n in r e s t of c o u n t r y . ) P u b l i c i t y n o t e — r e a l e s t a t e values increase w i t h good l a w n s ; t h e "high p r i e s t " of good lawns is t h e golf course greenkeeper. A place on t h e bulletin b o a r d f o r t h e m a i n t a i n e n c e dept. helps t h e club, p r e v e n t s some kicks, shows t h a t g r e e n k e e p i n g is a science. G r e e n k e e p e r s can n o t be m a d e in t e n weeks, it is a w o r k of a l i f e t i m e . T h e b e s t courses a r e o f t e n t h e h a r d e s t h i t b y t r o u b l e . T h e r e is n e e d of t h e b e s t available g r e e n k e e p e r , f o r one n e v e r k n o w s w h e n t r o u b l e is to come. T h e b e s t advice is t o let m e m b e r s k n o w w h a t is g o i n g o n on t h e c o u r s e ; t h e y t h e n will g e t t h e idea t h a t g r e e n k e e p i n g is a b r o a d , i n t r i c a t e , complex job. WHAT THE "GREENKEEPERS "CLUB" M E A N S TO ME by H o w a r d D. F a r r a n t (The C o u n t r y Club, Brookline, Mass.) F i f t e e n y e a r s ago, G r e e n k e e p e r s a f e w miles a p a r t h a r d l y k n e w each other, and w h a t t h e y f o u n d o u t a b o u t t h e i r p a r t i c u l a r course, how this a n d t h a t w o r k e d , w a s s o m e w h a t of a secret t o t h e m a l o n e ; t h e n a little l a t e r a f e w Greenkeepers got together and sent w o r d f o r all those who could, to a t t e n d a m e e t i n g a t which t i m e some kind of a club would be f o r m e d . B e i n g v e r y i n t e r e s t e d in t h e Golf Course w o r k I a t t e n d e d t h a t m e e t i n g and b e c a m e a c h a r t e r m e m b e r of t h e G r e e n k e e p e r s Club of N e w E n g l a n d . I h a v e listened t o t h e s p e a k e r s , t h e m a n y a r g u m e n t s , a n d h a v e had p l e n t y t o t h i n k over, b u t t h e two or t h r e e m i n u t e s s p e n t c h a t t i n g w i t h so and so g a v e m e an idea, c h a n g e d m y m i n d or a n s w e r e d m y question. I w a s p e p p e d up and went back to the job more d e t e r m i n e d to c a r r y on. One of t h e m o s t i n t e r e s t i n g f e a t u r e s to m e is t h e o p p o r t u n i t y to m e e t o t h e r G r e e n k e e p e r s f r o m all over N e w E n g land and to g e t in on t h e e x c h a n g e of n e w methods, a n d all these fellows m a k e u p a g r e a t g r o u p . W e all have o u r f a u l t s , I a d m i t , b u t t h e f r i e n d s h i p of these m e n m e a n s a lot to me, to say n o t h i n g of t h e value g a i n e d f r o m t h e i r ideas. R e c e n t l y in t h e " N e w s L e t t e r " an article r e f e r r e d t o t h e " G r e e n k e e p e r s C l u b " as a p i n k t e a a f f a i r ; evidently our club h a s t h r i v e d on pink t e a b e t t e r t h a n a n y o t h e r o r g a n i z a t i o n of its kind in t h e c o u n t r y . M a y b e it is b e c a u s e instead of too m u c h loud t a l k we have r e a l l y done some t h i n g s to help o u r m e m b e r s a n d o u r clubs. ^ \ I have h e a r d people say, " W h a t do you g e t f o r y o u r m o n e y , b e l o n g i n g t o t h e ' G r e e n k e e p e r s C l u b ' ? " My a n s w e r would be, "If you a r e i n t e r e s t e d in y o u r work, t h e r e is k n o w l e d g e t o be g a i n e d each d a y in all t h e one h u n d r e d a n d one j o b s we m u s t do." In Article II of t h e C o n s t i t u t i o n a n d By-laws is s t a t e d t h e p u r p o s e of t h i s club, " t h e a d v a n c e m e n t b y c o o p e r a t i o n of t h e i n t e r e s t s and w e l f a r e of its m e m bers, a n d t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t of u p l i f t i n g s t a n d a r d s of d i g n i t y a n d skill by coo p e r a t i v e e d u c a t i o n and t r a i n i n g in t h e v a r i e d r e q u i r e m e n t s of o u r p r o f e s s i o n . " To boil this down, we g e t — a d v a n c e m e n t , cooperation, u p l i f t i n g s t a n d a r d s , skill, e d u c a t i o n , v a r i e d r e q u i r e m e n t s . In a sense this is j u s t w h a t t h e Greenk e e p e r s Club has m e a n t to me. While I a m a c o m p a r a t i v e l y n e w m e m b e r of t h e club, I h a v e b e e n a t t e n d i n g m e e t ings w i t h m y f a t h e r e v e r since t h e earliest days of t h e club. I can r e m e m b e r those W i n t e r m e e t i n g s in H o r t i c u l t u r a l Hall. In t h o s e days I w a s p e r h a p s n o t so vitally i n t e r e s t e d in g r e e n k e e p i n g as t o d a y . Those t r i p s w e r e holiday outings to me. K T h e n c a m e m y decision to t a k e u p g r e e n k e e p i n g as m y vocation. I w e n t t o t h e S t o c k b r i d g e School a t Mass. S t a t e College. T h e r e I f o u n d t h a t t h e m e n in t h e G r e e n k e e p e r s Club of N e w E n g l a n d w e r e considered b y t h e f a c u l t y of t h e college as t h e ideal coaches f r o m w h o m a y o u n g m a n like myself could g e t t h e p r a c t i c a l t r a i n i n g so n e c e s s a r y to supp l e m e n t t h e t h e o r e t i c a l t r a i n i n g given a t t h e school. My first big job w a s a t a r e a l e s t a t e d e v e l o p m e n t golf course in Wisconsin. A f t e r b e i n g t h e r e a y e a r I had t h e p l e a s u r e of a t t e n d i n g t h e e a r l y m e e t i n g s of t h e Wisconsin G r e e n k e e p e r s Club, whose m a i n aims and e n d e a v o r s followed closely a f t e r t h e older N. E. organization. W i t h t h e c r a s h and depression came t h e r e t r e n c h m e n t of r e a l e s t a t e developm e n t s , so t h a t I w a s soon b a c k in N e w E n g l a n d . A f t e r s e c u r i n g a position h e r e I b e c a m e a m e m b e r of t h e club and att e n d e d m e e t i n g s in m y own r i g h t . I have f o u n d t h e club to be j u s t w h a t A r t i c l e I I s t a t e s : a place t o a d v a n c e t h r o u g h c o o p e r a t i v e e d u c a t i o n in t h e skill and t r a i n i n g in t h e v a r i e d r e q u i r e m e n t s of t h e p r o f e s s i o n . In o t h e r words, a g r a n d o p p o r t u n i t y to t a l k over with my fellow members the problems that m a y be t r o u b l i n g m e ; a place t o e n j o y t h e fellowship of m e n with i n t e r e s t s a n d ideas v e r y close to m i n e . WHAT THE GREENKEEPERS MEANS TO CLUB ME b y H o m e r C. D a r l i n g ( J u n i p e r Hill G. C., N o r t h b o r o , Mass.) It is a m i s t a k e f o r a n y m a n to ign o r e a n y o p p o r t u n i t y he m a y have to b e t t e r himself mentally, practically, a n d technically. Can a n y o n e a f f o r d to pass up intimate contact and friendly association with o t h e r m e n in his own p r o f e s s i o n , or field of p r a c t i c e . The a n s w e r is NO. T h a t is w h y I belong t o t h e G r e e n k e e p e r s Club. T h e G r e e n k e e p e r s Club appeals to me b e c a u s e it is f r e e f r o m politics. T h e r e is an a b u n d a n c e of unselfish willingness t o aid t h e o t h e r f e l l o w with his problems. T h e r e is no holding back of trade secrets. The other fellow's k n o w l e d g e is y o u r s f o r t h e asking. T h e r e is an e a r n e s t desire on all sides to g a i n m o r e k n o w l e d g e of t h e a r t of G r e e n k e e p i n g a n d t o t r a n s f o r m this acquisition into b e t t e r golf courses w h e r e so m a n y people m a y more thoroughly enjoy this wholesome n a t i o n a l game. Of course, a n y g r e e n k e e p e r m a y obt a i n advice a n d i n f o r m a t i o n he desires w i t h o u t b e i n g a m e m b e r of a g r e e n k e e p e r s club, b u t f r o m m y o b s e r v a t i o n t h e r e is a difference. C o n s t a n t c o n t a c t with the other greenkeepers at regular m e e t i n g s t h r o u g h - o u t t h e y e a r is a g o v e r n o r on egotism a n d self satisf a c t i o n . In spite of how well-kept y o u r course a p p e a r s to be you will always find t h e o t h e r fellows j u s t a bit b e t t e r somewhere, if you look. This c r e a t e s t h e desire to l e a r n m o r e a n d to do a b e t t e r j o b a t home. T h e benefits derived f r o m t h e educational t a l k s and discussions held r e g u larly t h r o u g h - o u t t h e w i n t e r m o n t h s a r e of u n t o l d value in k e e p i n g u p to d a t e on e x p e r i m e n t a t i o n a n d technical ¡inf o r m a t i o n , and all goes t o w a r d m a k i n g a more valuable greenkeeper. The s u m m e r m e e t i n g s which p r e s e n t t h e o p p o r t u n i t y to see a n d play on some of t h e best golf c o u r s e s in t h e section and t h e e x c h a n g e of ideas r i g h t w h e n t h e p r o b l e m s of y o u r course a r e m o s t p r o m i n e n t a n d a c u t e is an a d v a n t a g e t h a t no g r e e n k e e p e r should overlook. I have h e a r d it said t h a t some g r e e n s c h a i r m e n o b j e c t to t h e i r g r e e n k e e p e r s being a w a y f r o m t h e i r c o u r s e s once a m o n t h to a t t e n d t h e s e v a l u a b l e m e e t ings, b u t I f e e l sure if t h e c h a i r m a n could follow t h e line of t h o u g h t a t e v e r y one of these m e e t i n g s and see the favorable reaction and personal gain f r o m this c o n t a c t a t a t i m e when m o s t n e e d e d it would n o t only e l i m i n a t e a n y objection, b u t would c r e a t e t h e desire to insist on t h e g r e e n k e e p e r a t t e n d i n g every meeting. I have y e t t o visit a n y golf course t h r o u g h these r e g u l a r m e e t i n g s w i t h o u t o b t a i n i n g a t least one good idea, somet i m e s n o t always u s e f u l a t t h e m o m e n t , b u t surely of value f o r t h e f u t u r e . So I say, t h a t t h e G r e e n k e e p e r s Club m e a n s m u c h to me a n d I d o n ' t see how a n y g r e e n k e e p e r can a f f o r d n o t to b e l o n g to an o r g a n i z a t i o n like o u r s f o r all t h e p e r s o n a l g a i n a n d s a t i s f a c t i o n t h e r e is to be s e c u r e d . I r e c o m m e n d to a n y g r e e n k e e p e r who is n o t a l r e a d y a m e m b e r of such a club t o i n v e s t i g a t e f o r himself. Go to a m e e t i n g and listen to t h e t a l k s a n d discussions. See t h e g r o u p in action a n d observe t h e i r policies and objectives. PRESIDENT'S REPORT—1937 Fellow M e m b e r s : In r e v i e w i n g t h e y e a r of 1937, I sugg e s t t h a t you r e a d over t h e y e a r ' s n u m b e r s of t h e " N e w s l e t t e r " . I t gives us t h e h i s t o r y of 1987 a n d p e r h a p s we will find s o m e t h i n g f o r ourselves or t h e Club t h a t w e n t in one ear a n d o u t t h e other a t t h e time. O u r m e m b e r s h i p has a b o u t held its own in t h e last y e a r . T h e Golf activities have b e e n c a r r i e d on as usual. T h e T u r f Bill p r o j e c t f a i l e d b u t o u r c o m m i t t e e is a g a i n h o p e f u l l y a t w o r k . The Entertainment Committee has s t r e n g t h e n e d t h e e d u c a t i o n a l or p r o f e s sional i m p r o v e m e n t f e a t u r e s of o u r m e e t i n g s which I believe is s t e e r i n g a course in t h e direction of our m a i n objective. THE MACHINERY COURSE TREND IN GOLF MAINTENANCE by Philip Cassidy N e e d h a m Golf Club Golf C o u r s e m a c h i n e r y , a l t h o u g h in d e m a n d f o r m a n y y e a r s , has, with t h e e x c e p t i o n of g r e e n s m o w e r s a n d m i n o r accessories, seemingly w a i t e d f o r t h e so called " m a c h i n e a g e " to develop. T h a t t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of t h e automobile is g r e a t l y responsible f o r t h e a d v a n c e m e n t in m a c h i n e a n d m o t o r i z e d units, is a r e c o g n i z e d f a c t . T h e r e a r e , of course, climatic, soil and maintainence conditions which govern t h e use of c e r t a i n p o w e r e d u n i t s in t h e care of t h e Golf Course, b u t as a whole t h e economical f e a t u r e alone m a k e s t h e use of m o d e r n labor-saving e q u i p m e n t a necessity. A t p r e s e n t , t h e r e seems to be n o n e w m a j o r e q u i p m e n t in t h e m a k i n g b u t t h e r e is always a m a c h i n e p i c t u r e in some one's mind which n e e d s b u t a sponsor to be developed. T r a c t o r s have developed along w i t h t h e a u t o f r o m chain drive a n d f r a g i l e h e a v y p a r t s to light p o w e r f u l units, easy to handle, h a v i n g n u m e r o u s a t t a c h m e n t s , which w e r e once s e p a r a t e h o r s e d r a w n units. T h e e n d u r a n c e and life of t h e u p - t o - d a t e t r a c t o r , t o g e t h e r w i t h its a d a p t a b i l i t y , h a v e m a d e it a u n i t indisp e n s a b l e to golf course m a i n t e n a n c e . C u t t i n g u n i t s h a v e also developed accordingly. T h e F a i r w a y units, while h o r s e d r a w n , w e r e v e r y good, it is t r u e , b u t it t o o k t h e high speed a t which t h e y a r e n o w driven to develop t h e m into their p r e s e n t efficiency. W h e r e once t h e y w e r e heavy, f r a g i l e u n i t s of small cutt i n g capacity, t h e y a r e n o w light w e i g h t , high speed and p r a c t i c a l l y u n b r e a k a b l e . Side f r a m e s a r e o f t e n m a l l e a b l e iron, reels a r e of d i f f e r e n t alloy steels, drive g e a r s a r e of m a c h i n e c u t steel, nickel steel, and t h e d e m a n d f o r a lie on f a i r w a y t u r f similar t o t h a t f o u n d on t h e p u t t i n g s u r f a c e , h a s b r o u g h t to us a m a c h i n e which c o m p a r e s f a v o r a b l y in c u t t i n g ability w i t h t h e g r e e n s c u t t i n g units. These m a c h i n e s which w e r e once single u n i t s , n o w a r e hitched in g a n g s and t h e f u t u r e of this d e v e l o p m e n t will be g o v e r n e d only b y t h e h a u l i n g capacity of p o w e r h a u l i n g e q u i p m e n t , and l a n d s c a p e contours. H a n d m o w e r s of all descriptions h a v e become lighter, a l u m i n u m b e i n g used in some. T h e u n i t s n o w used f o r g r e e n s , tees, r o u g h , etc. have a l o n g e r l i f e a n d an easier o p e r a t i o n , while accomplishing a m o r e finished job. If one is f o r t u n a t e in h a v i n g w e e d f r e e and s t o n e f r e e soil t h a t holds a m e d i u m a m o u n t of m o i s t u r e , t h e cost will be lower. A r e c t a n g u l a r piece of land is c h e a p e r to w o r k with m a c h i n e s a n d t h e sod can be l i f t e d w i t h less waste. Sod g r o w n on m u c k soil has n o t succeeded w h e n t r a n s f e r r e d to high land b u t has done well w h e n moved to g r e e n s on m u c k land. W e t land g r o w s w e e d s in s p r i n g bef o r e one can w o r k on it. If t h e soil is stony, t h e soil should be s c r e e n e d by p o w e r and deeply if m o r e t h a n one crop of sod is to be g r o w n . W e t h i n k this will be c h e a p e r t h a n endless d i g g i n g over, r a k i n g and picking stone, in o r d e r t h a t t h e sod m a y be c u t well and cheaply. S t a r t i n g in S p r i n g t h e piece of l a n d to be p l a n t e d to sod in A u g u s t could be double disc-harrowed early. W e t h i n k sponginess of one piece of sod w a s caused b y plowing u n d e r sod a n d p l a n t i n g stolons to g r o w sod immediately. If a n u r s e r y piece is f a l l o w e d ; t h a t is, h a r r o w e d as o f t e n as a crop of w e e d s g e r m i n a t e , t h e r e will be f e w e r w e e d s left. If a n u r s e r y is to be p l a n t e d each y e a r plow e n o u g h f o r t h r e e y e a r s a h e a d and kill o u t t h e w e e d s by f a l l o w i n g . In o r d e r to be s u r e h a r r o w i n g g e t s done, k e e p t h e h a r r o w a t or n e a r t h e n u r s e r y piece. A t r a c t o r doing f a i r w a y or r o u g h m o w i n g can hitch on w h e n n e a r and kill a crop of small w e e d s in a s h o r t time. If a decision is n o t m a d e until n e a r p l a n t i n g t i m e to p l a n t a n u r s e r y , t h e sod, if any, can be r e m o v e d with a power sod c u t t e r a n d used f o r compost. T h e cost of g r o w i n g sod is less if one g r o w s a supply of stolons, p l a n t i n g t h e m one y e a r b e f o r e t h e sod is to be p l a n t e d . Y o u n g v i g o r o u s stolons t h a t can be mowed w i t h a scythe and p l a n t e d b r o a d cast a r e t h e best and a r e t h e quickest planted. Old tussocks and sod like m a t e r i a l t h a t m u s t be picked to pieces by h a n d r e q u i r e this e x t r a labor and a r e less vigorous. Five t h o u s a n d s q u a r e f e e t of V e l v e t b e n t h a s been a g e n e r o u s a m o u n t of sod to k e e p on h a n d f o r p a t c h i n g a n d plugging u n d e r our conditions. H i r e a R o t o tiller or Tilltivator f o r p u l v e r i z i n g soil as t h e s e m a c h i n e s do t h e w o r k m o r e t h o r o u g h l y a n d with less cost t h a n w i t h h a n d tools. To avoid deep t r a c k s and to keep t h e piece smooth it is b e t t e r to n o t p l o u g h or deeply w o r k a n u r s e r y n e a r p l a n t i n g t i m e ; or, if loosened up, t h e n roll it down firmly and a g a i n loosen u p t h e t o p inch only. If too s o f t , n u r s e r y land is easily filled with d e e p f o o t and o t h e r t r a c k s . If one p l a n t s in early A u g u s t somet i m e s several r a i n y d a y s come along r e s u l t i n g in need of v e r y little a t t e n t i o n . At t h i s time t h e seed on t h e stolons ( " V e l v e t H a y " ) will be saved a n d it helps g r e a t l y to t h i c k e n u p t h e sod. Also t h e sod will be f a r a d v a n c e d on t h e w a y to a u s u a b l e condition b y t h e t i m e of f r e e z i n g w e a t h e r . B u t if a h o t spell a p p e a r s , v e r y close a t t e n t i o n to w a t e r i n g is r e q u i r e d f o r t h e first t e n days. If p l a n t e d in S e p t e m b e r a f t e r t h e seed is lost, t h e r e is less d a n g e r of drying while p l a n t i n g or a f t e r w a r d s , a n d less w a t e r i n g is n e e d e d . One can g a t h e r t h e seed if u n a b l e t o p l a n t early, a n d use it l a t e r with t h e stolons or separately. Good success has been o b t a i n e d b y covering t h e evenly s c a t t e r e d stolons with a compost s p r e a d e r . The heavy ridges made by the machine anchor t h e stolons holding t h e m in c o n t a c t w i t h t h e W h a t e v e r y o u r soil o r climatic conditions, Woodruff can furnish the one mixture you need. If t h e piece is n a r r o w it can be w a t e r e d b y h a n d f r o m t h e edges a v o i d i n g deep t r a c k s m a d e w h e n t e n d i n g sprinklers. T h e excess of w a t e r applied by s p r i n k l e r s m a k e s t h e land v e r y s o f t . Velvet B e n t r e q u i r e s v e r y little w e e d i n g a f t e r it b e c o m e s established. Some g r o w e r s a r e g e t t i n g b y w i t h o u t w e e d i n g or only use chemicals. Clover and Chickweed should be t a k e n o u t w h e n v e r y small if t h e y a r e t o be w e e d e d out as a t t h a t s t a g e t h e whole p l a n t can be r e m o v e d . If t h e soil is loaded w i t h c r a b g r a s s or o t h e r w e e d s t h e cost of h a n d w e e d i n g will be m o r e t h a n t h e value of t h e sod. B e t t e r do it with a harrow before the planting year. Do n o t f o r g e t t h e soil used f o r dressing m a y be f u l l of crab grass, clover, chickweed, etc. B e t t e r s p r e a d it o u t a n d f a l l o w it b e f o r e using.
