T o d a y I would like to give my ideas on w h a t a g r e e n s k e e p e r should be qualified to do. I k n o w you d i d n ' t come u p h e r e j u s t because this is ano t h e r c o n f e r e n c e . You a r e h e r e to see, also, w h a t e d u c a t i o n h a s to offer t h e greenskeeping profession. Knowing that you a r e p r o f e s s i o n a l m e n who believe in e d u c a t i o n a n d have an open mind, you will t h i n k t h e s e f a c t s over, which I am p r e s e n t i n g to you. Now, w h a t is a golf course? A golf course t o d a y is a m a n u f a c t u r i n g p l a n t which p r o d u c e s a p r o d u c t called grass. This i n d u s t r y has a t h i r t y - o n e billion dollar i n v e s t m e n t w i t h a y e a r l y business of five h u n d r e d million dollars. W i t h an i n v e s t m e n t like this, t h e r e should be no excuse f o r so m a n y clubs on t h e v e r g e of closing in t h e past f e w y e a r s with t r a i n e d and experienced m e n . Now let's look back, d u r i n g t h e last 20 or 30 years, a n d see how golf courses have developed. Courses built d u r i n g this t i m e r a n a w a y with ideas. T h e y borrowed money, built large club houses, a n d t r e m e n d o u s t e e s a n d g r e e n s . T h i n k i n g n o t h i n g of t h e f u t u r e , and t h e g r e a t e s t p e r cent of m o n e y w a s s p e n t on t h e club house, t h e n i n e t e e n hole which is t h e d o w n f a l l of most clubs. These courses a r e f a c e d with the problem t o d a y as to w h e r e t h e y a r e going to g e t t h e m o n e y to continue. T h e old s a y i n g was, " E a t , drink, and be m e r r y f o r t o m o r r o w we m a y die." G r e a t ideas t h e y had to be sure, b u t w h a t a problem t h e y h a v e l e f t f o r us t o d a y , a n d w h a t a sad f u t u r e t h e y have in store. W h a t a r e t h e y doing to solve this p r o b l e m ? Some a r e h i r i n g n e w m a n a gers, o t h e r s a r e combining a n d m a k i n g p r o - g r e e n s k e e p e r job, and still o t h e r s a r e firing the g r e e n s k e e p e r and h i r i n g a c o m m o n l a b o r e r who h a s no knowledge of golf course m a i n t e n a n c e . W h e n an unqualified m a n a g e r t a k e s ver a club, he m a y c u t the b u d g e t -=ed in o p e r a t i n g t h e course. H e sees n o t a n g i b l e r e t u r n f o r t h e m o n e y he spends on t u r f . A new, hard-wood floor in t h e club house is in his mind an a d e q u a t e r e m i n d e r to t h e club m e m b e r s t h a t t h e y a r e g e t t i n g s o m e t h i n g in ret u r n f o r t h e i r m o n e y . The same with a pro, and common l a b o r e r s who have n o t t h e n e c e s s a r y knowledge of t h e w o r k i n g problem and product. Now w h a t h a p p e n s , t h e club is now p r o d u c i n g a lower g r a d e p r o d u c t , as in f a c t o r y , l o w e r i n g t h e s t a n d a r d of t h e p r o d u c t . As the y e a r s go by, t h e y w o n ' t ^ N be able to sell and t h e y will have to ~ close their doors. A n y business, w h e t h e r it is golf, m a k i n g shoes, boots, or tires, would do t h e same t h i n g unless it had a t r a i n e d and e d u c a t e d m a n to m a k e t h e p r o d u c t by t h e b e s t m a n a g e r i n g he knows. T h e biggest and only solution I t h i n k d e p e n d s on t h e p r o f e s s i o n a l g r e e n s k e e p er. Now, w h a t is a p r o f e s s i o n a l m a n ? A p r o f e s s i o n a l m a n r e q u i r e s an education which comes f r o m schools and colleges, such as a t t e n d i n g w i n t e r schools. This should m a k e t h e m qualified to t a k e complete c h a r g e of a golf course. Because of this e d u c a t i o n , he has the golf course t o h e a r t , which m a y n o t exist in any o t h e r m a n in c h a r g e of t h e course. H e will see w h e r e all t h e m o n e y is spent, a n d nine t i m e s o u t of t e n , will find t h a t the club house is his biggest h e a d a c h e , which I have r e f e r r e d to as t h e n i n e t e e n hole. Doesn't it seem f u n n y t h a t this e x t r a hole t a k e s m o r e t h a n its s h a r e ? He will solve this problem, and cut down t h e overhead on this hole a n d m a k e t h e p r o d u c t of the o t h e r /""V e i g h t e e n holes w o r t h selling. Big businesses, a n d golf courses a r e s u r e l y such, a r e c u t t i n g down there overhead, b u t n o t on t h e p r o d u c t . T h e y a r e t e a r i n g down and closing t h e i r buildings to cut taxes, i n s u r a n c e and upkeep, b u t a l w a y s p r o d u c i n g a f i r s t - g r a d e p r o d u c t . W h y can we n o t do the same on t h e golf course if it can be done, to r e d u c e t h e o v e r h e a d ? It is t h e g r a s s p l a n t on t h e e i g h t e e n holes t h a t t h e cust o m e r w a n t s . Millions of dollars a r e saved every y e a r by t r a i n e d and exp e r i e n c e d m e n in business. T h e golf course is a business e n t e r prise t o d a y a n d should be r u n as one. A n o t h e r g r e a t asset in business is its o r g a n i z a t i o n , which m e e t s and w o r k s f o r t h e w e l f a r e of its m e m b e r s . It b r i n g s new m a t e r i a l to t h e m in its p a r t i c u l a r field. This is b r o u g h t on by r e s e a r c h a n d study. T h e medical society b r i n g s to t h e i r m e m b e r s t h e n e w discoveries of t h e p a s t y e a r . W h a t is its o b j e c t ? A good p r o f e s s i o n a l o r g a n i z a t i o n is to prom o t e e d u c a t i o n in its p a r t i c u l a r field. No one section of t h e c o u n t r y is t r y i n g to o u t d o t h e o t h e r . T h e y a r e w o r k i n g f o r t h e g e n e r a l i n t e r e s t of t h e c o u n t r y as a whole. In these o r g a n i z a t i o n s t h e y a r e n o t d i c t a t i n g w h a t a m e m b e r or g r o u p should do or a s k i n g f o r salaries. W h a t would h a p p e n to s t u d y a n d r e search work, to medical society if the p r o f e s s i o n a l doctors s t a r t e d to d i c t a t e and fix salaries? B u t he is w o r k i n g f o r t h e good of t h e p r o f e s s i o n . Now, in t h e g r e e n s k e e p i n g p r o f e s s i o n , we have a n a t i o n a l club a n d sectional clubs. W o u l d it n o t be wise to g e t t o g e t h e r f o r the w e l f a r e of t h e p r o f e s s i o n of g r e e n s k e e p e r as a whole. Was it Lincoln who said, " T o g e t h e r we s t a n d and divided we f a l l " . The g r e e n s k e e p i n g p r o f e s s i o n lies in our h a n d s a n d it is u p t o us to decide w h e t h e r it will survive or not. The prof e s s i o n a l m a n will have t o be qualified to h a n d l e t h e j o b of t a k i n g complete charge of the golf course and a n s w e r to only one as a check. This is the board of directors. When a professional greenskeeper receives the e d u c a t i o n and t r a i n i n g , he can be on t h e same p a r as a c h a i r m a n , who has also been e d u c a t e d a n d t r a i n e d in his p a r t i c u l a r field. I n d u s t r y has m e n qualified to p r o d u c e its p r o d u c t b e c a u s e t h e y a r e e d u c a t e d m e n . Can a m a n who is u n t r a i n e d give efficient o r d e r s ? I t is like e l e c t i n g a m a n , who has been b r e e d ing horses all his life, to t h e c h a i r m a n ship of an a e r o p l a n e f a c t o r y . W h a t does he k n o w a b o u t flying an a e r o p l a n e ? Well, t h e same t h i n g m a y h a p p e n on a golf course when t h e y elect a c h a i r m a n or h i r e a g r e e n s k e e p e r . A n o t h e r exa m p l e ; a c h a i r m a n o r d e r s his g r e e n s k e e p e r to b u y e q u i p m e n t or build a g r e e n a t a c e r t a i n location. W h o p a y s t h e price if this e q u i p m e n t or g r e e n does n o t come u p to s t a n d a r d ? W h o s u f f e r s ? Not t h e c h a i r m a n ; b u t t h e g r e e n s k e e p e r a n d nobody else. In a f a c t o r y a m a n who is doing t h e b u y i n g knows t h e m a c h i n e r y and t h e m a k i n g of t h e p r o d u c t . T h e y d o n ' t h a v e the b o a r d of directors, p r e s i d e n t or t r e a s u r e r pass j u d g m e n t , b u t t h e e x p e r t who has received t h e t r a i n i n g on t h a t m a c h i n e and p r o d u c t places t h e o r d e r . On the golf course, t h e w e l l - i n f o r m e d g r e e n s k e e p e r would n e v e r be asked to pay t h e price of a c h a i r m e n e r r o r , because he is a professional man. Times have c h a n g e d a n d it is t i m e we h a d a c h a n g e in o u r golfing i n d u s t r y if we w a n t to survive. I n a good business t h e y d o n ' t h a v e a n e w m a n in c h a r g e e v e r y f e w y e a r s t o give o r d e r s . T h e m a n t h a t is giving t h e o r d e r s k n o w s all a b o u t t h e p r o d u c t t h a t is b e i n g sold in his m a n u f a c t u r i n g p l a n t . A p r o f e s s i o n a l g r e e n s k e e p e r m u s t receive an education. T h e c e n t e r of education is schools a n d colleges. H e m u s t t r a i n a n d e n c o u r a g e o t h e r m e n to be qualified to t a k e his place. T h e g r e e n s k e e p e r s who a r e holding t h e y o u t h or m a n back, b y n o t giving him this chance a t e d u c a t i o n in this p r o f e s s i o n , is n o t a p r o f e s s i o n a l m a n . W h a t would h a p p e n if e v e r y p r o f e s s i o n a l m a n p r a c t i c e d this? Y o u d o n ' t h e a r a d o c t o r or l a w y e r holdi n g b a c k a y o u t h who is t r y i n g to quali f y himself to t a k e his position w h e n t h e t i m e comes. W h y s h o u l d n ' t We enc o u r a g e an individual who is i n t e r e s t e d in this w o r k to t a k e his place when t h e t i m e comes? Then, g r e e n s k e e p i n g will be r a n k e d as a p r o f e s s i o n w h e r e it r i g h t f u l l y belongs. If I h a d m o r e e d u c a t i o n in t h e p r e p a r a t i o n of speeches and delivering addresses, m y t h o u g h t s would be m o r e clear to you t o d a y . E d u c a t i o n is o u r g r e a t e s t asset. THE PERSONAL EQUATION IN GREENKEEPING by P a u l J . L y n c h ( P a p e r p r e s e n t e d by J a c k G o r m l e y a t Recreation Conference) 1 Attitude toward job: O u r a t t i t u d e t o w a r d o u r job can be i l l u s t r a t e d by t h e s t o r y of t h e t h r e e t e a c h e r s . W h e n asked w h a t t h e y w e r e doing t h e first said " I ' m e a r n i n g $100 a m o n t h . " T h e second said, " I ' m giving children k n o w l e d g e , " while t h e t h i r d said, " I ' m h e l p i n g t o mold t h e f u t u r e A m e r i c a " . H o w do we visualize o u r j o b ? A r e we j u s t m a k i n g a living, a r e we j u s t t r y i n g to g e t by, or a r e we s t r i v i n g f o r p e r f e c t i o n ? O u r aims a r e a l w a y s changing, w h a t m i g h t be p e r f e c t i o n t o d a y b e c o m e s obsolete t o m o r row. This m a k e s a n a d v e n t u r e out of our job, k e e p s us on o u r toes, a n d cert a i n l y does n o t p e r m i t m o n o t o n y as f a r a s conditions to be m e t a r e c o n c e r n e d . Our r e w a r d f o r c o n s t a n t s t r i v i n g is t h e greatest happiness known to mankind through self-expression in creative activity. 2—Attitude toward your employers: T h e " A r e we m e n or m i c e ? " a t t i t u d e m a y be c a r r i e d too f a r . Frequently ovei'-assertiveness is due to an i n f e r i o r i t y complex. T h e s o u l - s a t i s f y i n g k n o w l e d g e t h a t you r e a l l y k n o w y o u r j o b and a r e capable of c a r r y i n g it o u t effectively, should provide you w i t h a positive a n d dignified b e a r i n g in y o u r p e r s o n a l cont a c t s w i t h y o u r employers. This does n o t m e a n bluff and b l u s t e r , b u t t a c t a n d t o l e r a n c e . The " E x c u s e me, s i r " b a t h r o o m episode b e s t i l l u s t r a t e s t a c t , a n d T h o m a s Edison, calmly a c c e p t i n g t h e criticisms of a second y e a r electrical engineering student, tolerance. H u m a n n a t u r e b e i n g w h a t it is, a know-it-all a t t i t u d e is disgustingly i r r i t a t i n g and instinctively a r o u s e s a sense of a n t a g o n ism in o t h e r people. I wish t o s t a t e e m p h a t i c a l l y t h a t b y t h e f o r e g o i n g r e m a r k s I do n o t m e a n t h a t a g r e e n k e e p e r should be a " C a s p a r Milquetoast." Fawning f e a r never produced a good job. T h e business a n d p r o f e s s i o n a l m e n who comprise y o u r b o a r d of g o v e r n o r s r e s p e c t t h e m a n who firmly b a c k s u p his convictions w i t h o u t being pig-headed a b o u t possible i m p r o v e m e n t of his own ideas. T h e glorified f a r m e r and l a b o r f o r e m a n called ' A - l ' is out, b u t t h e g r e e n k e e p i n g s u p e r i n t e n d e n t w i t h t h e k n o w l e d g e a n d ability to back u p t h a t t i t l e can say " Y e s , s i r , " in a d i f f e r e n t t o n e of voice t h a n t h e s e r v a n t o r d e r e d to black his m a s t e r ' s boots. K n o w l e d g e w i t h ability, d i g n i t y with r e s p e c t , a n d sincere f r i e n d l i n e s s with r e s e r v e will, I believe, solve t h e p e r s o n a l e q u a t i o n with y o u r club m e m bers. I h a v e emphasized t h i s f a c t o r because even t h e b i g g e s t a n d best u n d e r t a k i n g s n e e d a public r e l a t i o n s counsel. 3—-Attitude toward your employees: F r i e n d s h i p with r e s p e c t b r e e d s loyalty. T h e loyal employee, all other t h i n g s b e i n g equal, is t h e b e s t employee. T h e hail-fellow-well-met attitude toward y o u r e m p l o y e e s m a y m a k e it s u p e r ficially easier f o r t h e boss b u t seldom in itself p r o d u c e s m a x i m u m r e s u l t s . W o r k m e n will r e s p o n d b e t t e r t o someone t h e y r e s p e c t t h a n t o j u s t a good fellow. A f t e r fifteen y e a r s as an em? p l o y e r of f r o m 1 to 100 people, I have f o u n d t h a t absolute i m p a r t i a l i t y a n d c e n t r a l i z a t i o n of a u t h o r i t y a r e t h e m o s t i m p o r t a n t f a c t o r s in employee satisf a c t i o n . N o t h i n g will b r e a k down m o r a l e f a s t e r or m o r e completely t h a n c o n t r a d i c t o r y o r d e r s f r o m two or more sources. If you a r e f o r t u n a t e e n o u g h to have a l a b o r f o r e m a n see to it t h a t all o r d e r s a r e issued t h r o u g h him. It is o f t e n m u c h easier to do a t h i n g y o u r self b u t , if you a r e going to delegate a u t h o r i t y , f o r goodness' sake don't w e a k e n it b y p r o m i s c u o u s o r d e r s of y o u r own. " H o w m a n y bosses do I have t o listen t o ? " is t h e a g g r i e v e d cry of too m a n y dissatisfied w o r k e r s . Be f a i r and d o n ' t f a i l to a c k n o w l e d g e an exceptional piece of w o r k . E v e r y b o d y likes a p a t on t h e back w h e n he has accomplished s o m e t h i n g o u t of t h e o r d i n a r y a n d y o u r employee is no d i f f e r e n t f r o m a n y o n e else. A f o u r - f l u s h e r , buck-passer, or i n c o m p e t e n t can n e v e r gain r e s p e c t . Set t h e example f o r y o u r m e n by conscientious w o r k a n d f a i r dealing a n d r e s p e c t is b o u n d to come. 4—Attitude toward yourself: S e l f - r e s p e c t is t h e c o r n e r stone of a n y c a r e e r . By this I do n o t m e a n egotism b u t a n u n d i s t o r t e d r e a l i z a t i o n of y o u r abilities and f a u l t s . The intricacies of r a i s i n g fine t u r f m a k e o u r s a w o r t h while and difficult p r o f e s s i o n to follow successfully. Be proud to be associated in this work. Y o u r a t t i t u d e t o w a r d y o u r self reflects itself in y o u r a p p e a r a n c e a n d m a n n e r . W h y , if you w a n t t h e r e c o g n i t i o n sought a f t e r b y t h e m e n in our p r o f e s s i o n , h a v e two s t r i k e s a g a i n s t you b e f o r e you s t a r t by a slovenly app e a r a n c e ? Our j o b is n o t one f o r d u d e s b u t n e i t h e r is it n e c e s s a r y to go a r o u n d looking like a lodger in a dime flop house. T h o u s a n d s of m e n ' s j o b s d e m a n d clean shaven f a c e s and r e g u l a r hair cuts. Can we a f f o r d to m e e t o u r m e m b e r s w i t h a two d a y ' s b e a r d ? Suitable clothing does n o t m e a n w h i t e flannels b u t n e i t h e r does it m e a n overalls t h a t a r e r e a d y f o r t h e ash m a n . Self-analysis is a g r e a t t h i n g if n o t c a r r i e d too f a r . I t h a s r e s u l t e d in m a n y of us c o n s t a n t l y s t r i v i n g t o increase o u r s t o r e of k n o w l e d g e . H e n c e t h e m a n y g r e e n k e e p e r s in a c t u a l service and w i t h y e a r s of e x p e r i e n c e who a r e att e n d i n g t h e v a r i o u s s h o r t courses. Ade- q u a t e c o m p e n s a t i o n f o r our w o r k is s o m e t h i n g we a r e t r y i n g t o b r i n g a b o u t . L e t ' s m a k e ourselves so v a l u a b l e t h a t this r e w a r d m u s t follow. B u t f o r H e a v e n ' s sake d o n ' t j u s t bellyache a n d do n o t h i n g a b o u t it. S e l f - p i t y is t h e m o s t deadly a t t i t u d e a n y m a n can a c q u i r e . L e t our a t t i t u d e be one of pride in o u r p r o f e s s i o n a n d d e t e r m i n a t i o n to r a i s e our s t a n d a r d s . One of t h e visible f a c t o r s of this a t t i t u d e is m e m b e r s h i p in o u r local and n a t i o n a l g r e e n k e e p i n g o r g a n i z a t i o n s . Get behind t h e m w i t h all y o u r s t r e n g t h a n d this p e r s o n a l e q u a t i o n will be a long w a y t o w a r d solution. I t h a n k you. I f , as too m a n y of us seem to f e e l , someone is p l a y i n g our cards f o r us, it is b e c a u s e we a r e " d u m m y " and a r e allowing t h e m to. I do n o t believe this t o be t h e a c t u a l f a c t , b u t if such is t h e case, golf m a i n t e n a n c e is s u f f e r i n g a n d h a s s u f f e r e d f o r m a n y y e a r s f o r t h e cards a r e t h e n b e i n g played by i n f e r i o r minds. T h e c a r d s a r e t h e n b e i n g played by m i n d s which h a v e n o t t h e tools of ability, t e m p e r a m e n t and intuition f o r Greenk e e p i n g t h a t we have, f o r if those players did have t h e tools we w o r k with t h e y too would be in t h e G r e e n k e e p i n g fold. How stupid it is to allow ourselves to b r e a k out into • a cold s w e a t of f e a r w h e n e v e r job competition f r o m t h e Golf P r o f e s s i o n a l or t h e M a n a g e r is discussed. This f a t and lusty s c a r e c r o w h a s b e e n stuck u p b e f o r e us f o r so long t h a t I w o n d e r t h a t no one has s t r i p p e d t h e clothing f r o m it and exposed it f o r t h e s t r a w m a n t h a t it is. A golf prof e s s i o n a l is a golf p r o f e s s i o n a l b e c a u s e he too has a set of tools with which he works. H e has t h e tools of specific ability, peculiar temperament and particular intuition fo r playing and t e a c h i n g t h e g a m e of golf. So also has t h e M a n a g e r his set of tools with which he works. If c i r c u m s t a n c e s f o r c e t h e s e m e n into combining G r e e n k e e p i n g with t h e i r o t h e r d u t i e s t h e r e can be b u t one r e s u l t . If t h e c o m b i n a t i o n job s t a n d s t h e t e s t of t i m e it is b e c a u s e t h e P r o G r e e n k e e p e r or t h e Manager-Greenk e e p e r knowingly or u n k n o w i n g l y i s h a v i n g his G r e e n k e e p i n g cards p l a y e d f o r him. This is n o t a h a p p y s i t u a t i o n and one which does n o t occur excepting r a r e l y , a n d it exists solely b e c a u s e we G r e e n k e e p e r s h a v e n o t used t h e tools we w o r k with to t h e i r u t m o s t capacity. Men who a r e p u r s u i n g r e s e a r c h in golf t u r f h a v e t h e ability n e c e s s a r y f o r s u c c e s s f u l Greenk e e p i n g ; t h a t no one can deny, b u t t h e y lack, absolutely, t h e t e m p e r a m e n t and i n t u i t i o n f o r it, a n d w i t h o u t t h e s e two, ability is as n o t h i n g . These m e n h a v e not the t e m p e r a m e n t and intuition for G r e e n k e e p i n g because r e s e a r c h w o r k h a s a t e m p e r a m e n t and an i n t u i t i o n j u s t as p e c u l i a r l y its own as has Greenk e e p i n g . T h e r e f o r e these m e n a r e dedicated to r e s e a r c h j u s t as s u r e l y as you and I a r e dedicated to G r e e n k e e p i n g . T h e l e o p a r d c a n n o t c h a n g e its spots n o r can t h e camel pass t h r o u g h t h e needles eye. I c a n n o t conceive of a n y o n e who has an established r e p u t a t i o n in r e s e a r c h w o r k considering t h a t a c h a n g e to G r e e n k e e p i n g offers a n y a t t r a c t i o n or a d v a n t a g e s w h a t s o e v e r . If t h e r e is such an individual I will gladly swap j o b s with him and I have no f e a r in m a k i n g t h e p r o p h e c y t h a t m y f a i l u r e as a " r e s e a r c h e r " will be no m o r e i m m e d i a t e and no less complete t h a n will be his as a G r e e n k e e p e r . It has been well said t h a t all a n y school can do is help a good m a n become a b e t t e r m a n and m a k e a f o o l a b i g g e r fool. We w a n t t h e s e schools so t h a t a good m a n can have t h e s e o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r self b e t t e r m e n t , a n d since t h e n u m b e r of good m e n who can avail t h e m s e l v e s of t h e s e schools in a n y one y e a r is so limited t h a t t h e r e q u i r e d e n r o l l m e n t c a n n o t be o b t a i n e d , we need t h e others, t h e t y p e of m e n t h a t we have used as a r g u m e n t s a g a i n s t t h e s e schools. T h e t y p e of m e n who have n o t t h e ability, t e m p e r a m e n t a n d intuition f o r G r e e n k e e p i n g , b u t who believe t h a t it can be i n j e c t e d into t h e m a n d so, y e a r a f t e r y e a r , enroll in these schools. T h e y deserve our t h a n k s f o r m a k i n g t h e s e schools possible, t h u s giving to t h e good m e n of G r e e n k e e p i n g o p p o r t u n i t i e s to m a k e themselves b e t t e r m e n . T h a t is b u t one half of t h e pict u r e — i m p o r t a n t e n o u g h in itself but n o t so i m p o r t a n t as t h e f o l l o w i n g h a l f . I m m e d i a t e effects a r e a m i n o r consideration and in case desirable varieties a r e n o t available this spring, it m i g h t be wise to delay p l a n t i n g f o r a y e a r or more. It is i m p o r t a n t to select t r e e s which will reflect t h e spirit of t h e c o m m u n i t y f o r a t least half a c e n t u r y and possibly f o r two c e n t u r i e s or m o r e . T h e cost a n d value of shade t r e e s is up f o r discussion in connection with recovery f r o m h u r r i c a n e losses. A recent announcement from a n u r s e r y gives an idea of values a n d t h e cost of r e p l a c e m e n t s . A 10 inch, 35-40 f o o t high s o f t m a p l e is listed a t $190, a 7 % inch, 20-25 f o o t high N o r w a y m a p l e a t $125, a 6 inch, 25 f o o t high r e d maple at $35, a n d an 8 inch, 40 f o o t high s u g a r m a p l e a t $200. It is obvious t h a t r e p l a c e m e n t s w i t h good sized t r e e s r u n into m o n e y quickly a n d t h e use of t h e s e will be limited m o s t l y to e s t a t e s w h e r e costs a r e a s o m e w h a t m i n o r consideration. The s u p p l y of good, f a i r sized t r e e s in n u r s e r i e s m u s t be quite limited in p r o p o r t i o n to t h e d e m a n d .
