GREENKEEPERS CLUB OP NET/ ENGLAND NEWSLETTER July, 1943 The June meeting of the Club was held at Ponkapoag Golf Course, Monday, June 7th. Those present inspected and rated the U.S.G.A. Pie-Green and discussed damage on some of the velvets . No definite reason for cause of the injury was agreed upon, but disease, drying out, and resulting root development were blamed, Sam Mitchell has reported since this meeting that all areas affected (with few exceptions) have responded to watering and are now in good condition. The cause and effect of many of our turf problems are often hard to understand, but we all know that dehydration of any living thing contributes some weird complications, At 2:30 P.M. members inspected the first nine holes and were impressed by the development of the new greens. \ Intermittent rain drove everyone to cover and the business meeting was called to order at 7:20 P.M. after enjoying a fine dinner prepared by Mrs, Sam Mitchell and Mrs. Clarence Gibney. Alex Ohlson's resignation as Golf Committee Chairman was accepted with regret, Alex has done a fine job and provided the members with some interesting summer tournaments. Ralph Thomas was elected as Golf Committee Chairman to fill out the balance of the year. After discussion it vi&s voted to cancel the Annual John Shanahan Memorial Tournament at the Brae Burn Country Club between teams of the Greenkeepers Club of New England and the Professional Golf Asso, of New England if agreeable to the Professionals Association. The July 12th Meeting of the Greenkeepers Club of New England has been Cancelled] The Professionals agreed, that in view of the travel restrictions the Annual Greenkeeper-Pro tournament scheduled for July 12 should be given up this year. It was voted at the June meeting at Ponkapoag to hold a meeting at some Club other than Brae Burn if the annual affair was postponed, but a canvas of members makes it necessary to give up a July meeting, However, an August meeting will be held and plans are now under way for the meeting.
