Greenkeepers Club of New England NEWSLETTER DECEMBER, 9 9 4 4 The real test in golf and in life is not keeping out of the rough, but in getting out after we are in.—Rev. John H. Moore. The Belmont Country Club was the scene of the last external meeting of the Greenkeepers Club for 1944. After the customary salutations and sandwiches, the boys proceeded to assault Ted Murphy's golf course, which, incidentally, was in excellent condition. Harry "Slugger" Sperandio took home the low net prize with a 73. John "Terror" Latvis, Arthur "Loose" Anderson and "Silent" Gene Mauro were tied for the other net honors with 75's. Carl Bowman of Brae Burn nosed out Prexy Wanberg by one stroke to cop the high gross prize. Simi Braio's tee shot hit the pin on the 9th green but it was rolling too fast to enter the Hall of Fame. "Chet" Baldwin must have been under the impression that there was a prize for the most 6's, he had 11 out of a possible 18. Ralph Thomas scored a 5 on every hole but the third on the first nine. Ted Murphy's high score was undoubtedly due to his lack of concentration on his game and wondering what would be left of his golf course by sunset. The height of optimism was exemplified on the 12th tee when Howard Farrant made a bet with Bud Hayden that your reporter would drive the 12th green, 230 yards away. Howard lost and Bud and I split (the dime) 50-50. Moral—Never bet on the other fellow's game. Howard won his dime back on the 15th. The scores: Out In Gross Hdcp.
