"Education does not make a man good, it only makes him clever—usually for mischief." Will Durant. The first outdoor meeting of the season was held at the Ponkapoag Golf Course, May 7th. There were eighteen members and two guests, Captain Denning and our old friend, Deputy Commissioner Hayes, in attendance. The surrender of Germany was announced that morning and our meeting was opened by a motion to stand in reverential silence to pay tribute to the boys who gave their lives, also to the boys who have given everything but their lives and to give thanks for the end of the war in Europe. Following a fine lunch and a short business meeting, the boys made the usual assault on the golf course and according to the score cards, most of the divot diggers needed eagles on each of the last nine holes to finish anywhere near par for the course. Sam had his testing layout in its customary well-groomed condition. Harold Mosher won first net with a 68. I did not realize he was that good. John Latvis, "The Tatnuck Terror," took the second net prize and informed me that he had not played any golf since the tournament at Salem last fall. Arthur "Champ" Cody got the third net money and he also had the best gross score of the day, a very respectable 81, which included two deuces. Gene Mauro, "The Framingham Flash," captured fourth net honors with a 78, despite a big eight on the first hole. President Wanberg won the consolation prize with a fine bowling score. Paul wore his usual big smile, so look out for him next month on his home pasture. Ed Phinney made the long trip from Acoaxet and I saw him play three shots from behind the markers on the fourteenth tee. A drive that landed in back of the tee after hitting a tree, a left-handed putt from under the tee bench and finally a brassie to get off the tee. The scores: H. Mosher J. Latvis A. Cody E. Mauro S.
