When right, you can afford to keep your temper. When wrong, you can't afford to lose it. —Frank E. Polk. The last indoor meeting of the season was held April 2nd at the Hotel Statler. Mr. F. Raymond Witham of the International Fertilizer Company was the guest speaker. Mr. Witham covered the subject of fertilizers quite thoroughly, following which there was an interesting discussion of fertilizers. He said in part that the ideal fertilizer should contain about 50% of nitrogen in various forms of organics, but this mixture is not available at present. When all of the nitrogen is in nitrate form it is too concentrated, will pass into solution immediately and may do some harm to the roots. Most of the nitrate of soda originally came from Chile, but some is now produced synthetically in this country. There are islands in the Pacific with large quano deposits which may be owned by the United States after the war. There is plenty of phosphate in this country; in addition to the supply in Florida and Tennessee, new deposits were discovered a few years ago in the western states. Previous to 1935 there was no potash produced in this country and attempts to produce it from kelp were too expensive. Potash deposits have been discovered in the western part of the country and production is now sufficient so that none is imported at present and it may be exported in the future. Most of the new materials are of a synthetic nature and new synthetics may be developed. Fertilizer should be improved and cheaper after the war. The sulphate of ammonia shortage is due to an increased demand of about 100% and no increase above the normal amount produced. Sulphate of ammonia is the main source of nitrogen in mixed fertilizers and there is a larger acreage producing food and crops than usual. Dave Barry is on the move again. Smooth sailing, Narry, and keep on your course. A lad came up for a job one day, His only query was "What's the pay?" He seemed normal to me by his talk, He had two legs, at least he could walk. He started in the very next morn, And it wasn't long before he caught on, He learned where to hide and when to stall, And to come in late or not at all. I've got to take it with tongue in cheek, I realize I must be discreet, 'Cause if I get tough I know he'll breeze, And then he'll have me down on my knees. The following have been appointed on the Golf Committee: Arthur Anderson, chairman Narry Sperandio Paul Hayden The Entertainment Committee consists of the following: Harold Mosher, chairman Edward Hanson JACK COUNSELL The May meeting will be held at the Ponkapoag Golf Course at 2173 Washington Street Canton, Mass., May 7th.
