"A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else." —John Burroughs The October meeting was held at the Brae Burn Country Club, October 1st. The John Shanahan Memorial Tournament was revived after a lapse of three years and it brought out twenty-two greenkeepers and twenty pros in spite of the inclement weather. Ed "Big Bertha" Phinney of Acoaxet teamed up with Jimmy Nichols, the well-known one-armed golfer from Montaup, R. I., to win low-net and the John Shanahan shield. They also captured low gross honors with a seven over par 80. Ed had his one and three quarters back swing under control and when he unwinds on his tee shots, the pellet is headed for the next county. He looks like a good bet for the championship at Belmont, October 22nd. Jimmy's distance and accuracy was remarkable, it was really amazing to see him hit the various shots with one hand. The Nick Gianferante-Ralph Thomas team tied with the Tony Guimelli-Sandy Blake combination for second net honors. The scores: Jimmy Nichols — Ed Phinney Nick Gianferante — Ralph Thomas Tony Guimelli — Sandy Blake Tom Lamey — Steve Hannon Roy Bronson — Arthur Anderson George Morrison — Paul Wanberg John Lucy — Earl Polhamus Stuart Murray — Bud Hayden Vin O'Bey — Simi Braio Charles Malloy — Joe Oldfield Arthur Gusa — John Latvis Clarence Gibney — Sam Mitchell Harold Cahoon — Narry Sperandio Jack Simpson — Homer Darling George Astor — Manuel Francis Alex Bird — C. Charles O'Keefe has received his discharge and is now a civilian. Charlie's plans are indefinite at present. Ted Murphy has invited us to have our next meeting at the Belmont Country Club on October 22nd. The golf championship tournament will start at 12 o'clock, with the victuals and the business meeting scheduled to be held after the boys have pursued their weary tortured way around Belmont. At the business meeting it is expected that plans for our indoor meeting will be discussed, so bring your ideas with you and help us to provide an attractive program for the winter. JACK COUNSELL.
