Greenkeepers Club of New England NEWSLETTER „_ DECEMBER, 1946 tf The monthly greenkeepers meeting was held on October 28, 1946 at the Concord Country Club, Concord, Mass. This was considered the best turn out of the season. The hospitality shown by the Concord Club receive a vote of thanks from all those present. At 10:30 the Clapper Company of West Newton, Massachusetts began the demonstration of a new power greens machine, star lawn power and hand mower, also on display was a Spartan fairway unit. All were highly pleased with the performance of the machines. The business meeting was called at 11:45 with President Homer Darling presiding. Three applications were read; John Dombek, Ludlow, Massachusetts; John Fitzpatrick, Scituate, Massachusetts; Albert L Allen, Kernwood Country Club, Salem, Massachusetts; and they will be voted on at the next meeting. Open discussion was held as to the program for the coming winter meetings. It was decided the policy be as in the past, by having the leading turf men speak on our present day problems. A nominating committee consisting of Art Anderson, P. Cassidy and Sam Mitchell was appointed by President Homer Darling. They are to select the officers for the coming year. An equipment show was agreed upon to be held Monday, November 4th at the Ponkapoag Golf Club, Canton, Mass. and is open to all; dealers, greenkeepers and assistant greenkeepers. A golf tournament was held with selected drive and alternating shots on handicap basis. The winners: 1st. Ryan - N. J. Sperandio 2nd. Cassidy - Darling 3rd. Butler - Thomas Following the tournament a Technicolor Sound Film by the Sherwin Williams Company on the use of Weed-No-More (2-4-D) and Pestry (D-D-T) was shown in the Club Hall. Open discussion followed with questions being asked. A few highlights were; use Weed - No - More (2-4-D) in drop form instead of a fine spray when applied for the eradication of weeds. Not to be used in area of bent grasses. Pestroy (D-D-T) for ants on greens. On November 4th at the Ponkapoag Golf Club, Canton, Mass. was held one of the best out door equipment demonstrations in recent years. A vote of thanks to these dealers for their co-operation and great response in the short time (6 days) they had to prepare for the show. The Clapper Co., West Newton, Mass. On display and also demonstrated were tractors, jeeps, fairways units, power greens machines, lawn mowers and sickle bars, lawn sweepers, sprayers, snow plows, loaders, seeders, fertilizer spreaders, turf-E-rator, chain saw, sprinklers and other equipment. Now let's start preparing plans for our out door equipment show which is to be held next October. Suggestions will be appreciated from the greenkeepers, dealers and green-chairmen.
