Greenkeepers Club of New England I NEWSLETTER JULY, 1946. I "What's fitting, that is right." Anna Swanwich The June meeting was held at the Brae Burn Country Club with the Massachusetts Golf Association Service Section, Dr. Algren and Dr. Longecker of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station were present. i At 9:30 A.M. the party started from the first tee and an informal discussion was held while going over the golf course. i Chlorotic conditions were noted on certain strains of Velvet Bent. Possible causes for this condition were, lack of air due to infrequent spiking, or lack of available nitrogen to the grass plant itself because of heavy root structure. Dead areas on fairways were pointed out as possible and similar workings of the chinch bugs. Chinch Bugs were not found in these areas. Use of DDT to eradicate broad leafed weeds on fairways at the rate of 10 pounds per acre or Sabidilla at the rate of 5 pounds per acre was also suggested as a very effective weedicide. Talc would be a good carrier for applying either DDT or Sabidilla with duster. A noon day luncheon was served. The afternoon v/as devoted to golf and the prize winners were: Greenkeeper and Chairman Arthur Cody and Dr. F. J. Wenzler Wollaston Country Club 76-9-67 Chairman C. E. Pres. Homer Darling presided. Ted Swanson was elected as a member. He is located at the Bear Hill Golf Club, Stoneham, Mass. A dinner was served at 7:00 P.M. and the evening was devoted to speaking and discussion of turf rehabilitation problems. Dr. Algren spoke on weed control and insects. Dr. Longnecker on soils and grasses. Thousands for the club house. But what about the golf course equipment. Let's face it, golf clubs need up to date modern equipment, and this would be a definite saving of time and money to club. There should be reserve funds set aside each year to meet the need for this equipment when needed. Let's not have a repetition of the thirties in trying to struggle through to make both ends meet. Have you paid your 1946 dues? If not, mail them to Treasurer Jack Counsell, Salem Country Club, Peabody, Mass., and join the list of members in good standing which will be published in the Newsletter soon. The next meeting will be held at the New Bedford Country Club, North Dartmouth, Mass., July 1st. Mike O'Grady, Greenkeeper, as host.
