L. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."窶認. D. Roosevelt The Charles River Country Club was the scene of the May meeting of the Greenkeepers. Members of that club showed their fine hospitality and served luncheon gratis. It was appreciated by all present. Many events constituted the program of the day. The following demonstrations took place: 10:30 11:15 12:00 1:00 The sickle power mowers built by Toro, .was sponsored by the Clapper Co. A new welding machine. Lunch, followed by a short business meeting with Pres. Homer Darling presiding. A demonstration of the Lombard gas and air chain saw. All this equipment was explained and operated by the respective dealers. Held the first golf tournament of the year and many of the boys covered a great deal of territory. Scores high. There were sixteen entries and those who received winning prizes were as follows: 1st. N. J. Sperandio, Concord Country Club 87-12-75 2nd. Sam Mitchell, Ponkapoag Country Club 101-25-76 3rd. Ralph Thomas, Pine Meadows Golf Club 90-14-76 At this time we ail express our deepest sorrow at the passing of a good friend and a hard worker of our organization, Paul Wanberg, former greenkeeper of the Weston Golf Club. Ladies' night was held at the Sudbury Town Hall, Sudbury, Mass., and a good time was had by all those present. Country Clubs should cover the expenses of the greenskeeper, to the monthly meeting. It has been realized in the past, that country clubs and greenskeepers have not fully taken advantage of the opportunities afforded them. The value of information received from the various activities which are taken up by the greenskeepers club would be of real .help to any country club seeking improvements. It would be now proper that clubs set aside in their budgets each year, an essential expense account to enable the greenskeeper to receive the most up to date methods of operating golf courses, and to see to it, that their greenkeeper be present at the monthly meetings. Knowledge gained by this would pay great dividends to the club, and also further the value of the greenskeeper. Country Clubs can well realize the fact, that there are always more and better ways of making the imp 'ovements necessary. The next meeting to be held at the Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton on Monday, June 3rd, will consist of a joint meeting of the member clubs of the Massachusetts Golf Association and the Greenskeepers Club, and will have an outstanding agronomist to discuss turf rehabilitation, fertilizers, weed elimination and kindred subjects. The program will begin at 9:00 A. M. when Dr. Gilbert H. Ahlgrin and Dr. Longnecker of the state of New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station will start from the first tee at Brae Burn and walk over the course, pointing out turf deteriation, soil deficiency, and weed conditions and offer suggestions for remedial action. At 12:00 noon a lunch will be served. The afternoon will be devoted to golf, playing foursomes, with the Club Greens Committee chairman playing with his greenskeeper. Dinner will be served at 6:30 P.M. and the evening devoted to a discussion of the problems of turf rehabilitation and kindred subjects. The cost of the lunch will be $1.25 and the dinner $3.00, tax included.
