I Greenkeepers Club of New England § | NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 1946 I The October meeting was held at the Brae Burn Country Club, West Newton, Mass. The John Shanahan Memorial Tournament was played. A good turn out of Pros, and Green- . keepers participated. Twenty eight teams left the first tee, and when it was over, Neptune— Darling tied with Cahoon—N. J. Sperandio for 1st. with 69 net. It was then decided to play off first prize in sudden death fashion. Both teams got off to a good tee shot on the 1st. hole, Cahoon's pitch fell short with Darling making a beautiful 2nd. shot, 6 ft. from the pin. Sperandio approached and was still not inside of Darling's ball. Cahoon just missed his putt giving them a five. Having two putts, Neptune—Darling, to win, took a four, and this gave them possession of the shield for the coming year. The team of Gianferante—Thomas took 3rd. honors with net 71. The course was in good shape and Andy spared no yardage by having a long course. The next meeting will be held at the Concord Country Club, Concord, Mass., Monday, October 28th. Host greenkeeper, N. J. Sperandio. A demonstration of Toro's latest power greens mower will take place at 10:30 A.M. A buffet luncheon will be served at 11:30, followed by a business meeting. It is hoped that the golf tournament will be under way by 12:30 so as to be through before dark. Immediately following the tournament. Mr. Roger Moore, sales representative of the Sherwin Williams Company, will show their Technicolor Sound Film regarding Weed-No-More (2-4-D) and Pestroy (D.D.T.) two new products that should be of interest to the Greenkeepers. Note:—In one of the articles in the Newsletter it was stated, "That country clubs should pay all expenses of its greenkeepers to the monthly meetings, due to the fact of the valuable knowledge he derives which would be benefitting to its club." All ready it has been adopted by a few country clubs and I can see that other country clubs would do same if their attention were brought to it. You're dealing with educated club men today. Editor—A.
