Greenkeepers Club of New England NEWSLETTER OCTOBER, 1946 _ & , The September meeting was held at the Salem Country Club, Peabody, Mass., Host Greenkeeper Jack Counsel!. The annual Greenkeeper's Championship was held, with Arthur Cody successfully defending his title. His score not too brilliant, and that is not saying much for the rest of the boys. Low gross Art Cody 1st. net R. Thomas 2nd. net D. Barry 3rd. net Tie—Hayden and Francis 1st. High gross S. Braio Special prize 2nd. High gross J. Denardi Special prize The members witnessed a demonstration of Jack's new rough mower, the blitzer. The R. I. meeting which was held Wednesday, September 11th, at the State College in Kingston was very well attended. There were Greenkeepers present from New Jersey Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The experimental putting green and lawn plots were very interesting with discussions led by Dr. DeFrance, Dr. Odland, and Mr. Allen. Puraturf seems to be an excellent fungicide according to tests. The dealers had a very interesting display considering the way things are today. The speakers were Charles H. Hartley, secretary Rhode Island Golf Association, Dean Mason N. Campbell, director R. I. agricultural experiment station; Marshall E. Farnham President National Greenkeeping Superintendents association and Dr. Fred V. Grau, director U s Golf Association. The next meeting of the New England Greenkeepers' Club will be on Monday, October 7th at the Brae Burn Country Club, West Newton. The annual John Shanahan memorial tournament will be played. It is the Pro-Greenkeepers tournament and is played selected drives, alternate shots One half of the greenkeepers' handicap will be deducted from the gross. Of each pair playing in the tournament, one of the players must be a member of either the P.G.A. or the New England Greenkeepers Club. Greenkeepers may play with pros from clubs other than their own but if you do not have a partner, come because there will be some pros without greenkeepers partners Starting time will be from 10:30 A.M. to noon.
