Greenkeepers Club of New England NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER, 1946 The August meeting was held at the Haverhill Country Club, Haverhill, Mass. Manuel Francis, Greenkeeper host, gave an inspiring welcome to all members present. Many fine comments were made on the condition of the course. At 12:30 a delicious luncheon was served, which was followed by a short business meeting. Homer Darling presided at the meeting. Joseph E. Butler of the Wayland Golf Club, was elected as a member of the club. The applications of Samuel Schiavone, Worcester Country Club, Worcester, Mass., and Arthur J. MacLean of the Vesper Golf Club, Lowell, Mass. were read. These applications will be voted upon at the next meeting. In the morning a demonstration of the Trav E. Lawn sprinkler was given. Many members showed much interest in its value for watering fairways. The afternoomwas-devoted to a golf tournament. The prize winners were as Hollows : 1st. M. Francis 86-18-68 2nd. M. Ryan 80-9-71 There was a three-way tie for 3rd and 4th prize. Cassidy, Anderson and N. J. Sperandio with 72 net. As the result of a toss up, Sperandio and Anderson won. Robert Mitchell is well on the road to recovery from his recent illness. George Rommell is now located at the Whippoowell Country Club, New York City district, as Superintendent. He will be in charge of the restoration of the course, which has been shut down during the war years. —NOTICE— The Fifteenth Annual Greenkeepers Field Day sponsored by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Golf Association, and Greenkeepers Association will be held at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station, Kingston, Rhode Island, September 11th. Although this meeting is partly sponsored by the Rhode Island Greenkeepers Association as part of their service to members, it is open to all who are interested in turf problems. This meeting is near the close of a very busy season to give an opportunity to talk over the turf problems of 1946 and how they were met. Representatives of the U. S. Golf Association, Natural Greenkeepers Association, New England, Connecticut, Northeastern New York, Rhode Island, and New Jersey Associations will discuss important problems of the past season. The manufacturers and distributors of equipment and supplies will support the meeting with excellent demonstrations. This will give an opportunity to inspect certain labor-saving machinery and materials that you need in your work. A cordial invitation is extended to you to take part in the program and to inspect the experimental putting green and lawn plots where varieties of creeping, colonical, and velvet bent and other grasses are under experiment and demonstration with regard to soil conditions, compost top dressing, effect of different fertilizers, disease, insect a n d w e e d control and several promising selections of bent grass strains.
