I Greenkeepers Club of New England NEWSLETTER MARCH, 1947 The February Greenkeeper meeting, was held at the Hotel Statler, Boston, Mass. There was a good turnout of members. The Guest speaker was .Mr, Orrin Smith, well known golf Architect and Builder. Mr. Smith gave a very good outline of the work, that he has done in the construction, rehabilitation and redesigning of golf courses. He stressed the importance of hiring a good Greenkeeper, after the construction of course, so that the turf is given the proper treatment. Much will depend upon him, as to whether or not, the builder has done a successful job. The Greenkeeper is: the biggest asset the club can have. The Business meeting was called to order by Vice-President, Philip I. Cassidy. Alfred Edmondson, of the Myopia Hunt Club, was voted in, as a regular member. Routine business was acted upon. Final plans were made and announced to those who planned to attend the Turf Conference and Show at the Hotel New Yorker, New York City. The Turf Conference and Show was well represented by The New England Greenkeepers Club. Thirty Two members were present. It was very interesting, educational, and enjoyed by all. They are now looking forward to the day, when the show will be in Boston. There seems to be considerable discrepancy between the levels of salary in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and other large metropolitan centres. The problem confronting the New England men is "Why this large variation? Particularly, why should this area be in the lower group when our Greenkeepers are second to none as Greenkeepers?" This is attested by the fact that other sectors have siphoned away some of our best men and have started them at higher rates than they were being paid here. Many club officials and even top-flight club members seem to feel that "New England Greenkeepers are overpaid." Just why do they feel this way? Our speaker, Mr. Grover C. Shaw, has the answer. He will give it to us (if we can take it) at our special meeting on Monday, March 10, at 3 P.M., Hotel Bradford, Boston. No member can afford to miss this meeting! Considerable discussion may follow, so we suggest that this meeting be limited to members only. DON'T ALLOW ANYTHING TO KEEP YOU FROM THIS MEETING! Editor A. J. Sperandio l
