"A Happy New Year to a l l " A New Years resolution for you, as a member of the New England Greenkeeper Club — "I will attend the Greenkeeper monthly meetings this coming year." The first indoor meeting was held at the Hotel Bradford, Boston, Mass., Monday, December 1, 1947. Guest speaker was Professor Lawrence S. Dickinson of the University of Massachusetts, also present with Professor Dickinson was his new assistant Geoffrey Cornish, who has had considerable experience in the maintenance and construction of golf courses. The University of Massachusetts is extending its program on turf. A brief outline of this new program was given by Professor Dickinson; to mention a few highlights they are as follows: 1—To have grass plots of different strains of grass. 2—The construction of a practice putting green 18,000-20,000 square feet, which will be played upon constantly by members of the College campus, this putting green will have various strains of grass. 3—To have equipment demonstrations of the power green mowers, lawn mowers and other machinery, which will be used in their maintenance problems. 4—With the cooperation of the Greenkeeper, have experiments of turf greens and fairways on. different golf courses in the state. A business meeting was called to order by President Homer Darling. Routine business was acted upon. The nominating committee reported on the new slate of officers that is to be voted upon at the next annual meeting. They are: President Philip I. Cassidy 1st Vice President Harold G. Sperandio and third member Ted Swanson, was appointed to determine how the oldest Greenkeeper can be recognized for the part he has played in the development of the profession. Another committee headed by Homer Darling is to report the ways and means in establishing a fund to aid in carrying out the turf experiments now being planned at the University of Massachusetts under the guidance of Professor Dickinson. A turf conference will be held in March, at the University of Massachusetts. Dates will be published later. Philip Cassidy, Greenkeeper at the all hope for his quick recovery. Weston Golf Club, Weston, Mass., is ill and we H. Farrant has resigned as Greenkeeper of "The Country Club", Brookline, Mass., after many years of service to accept a similar position at the Pine Brook Country Club, Weston, Mass.
