Greenkeepers Club of New England NEWSLETTER OCTOBER, 1948 "As a general rule the most successful man in life is the man who has the best information." (Benjamin Disraeli) The Seventeenth Annual Greenkeeper's field day was held at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station, Kingston, R. I. The meeting was well represented by notable turf men, such as the Drs. DeFrance, Kerr, Smith, J. C. Schread, Fred V. Grau and Prof. Rowell. There was an inspection and demonstration of labor saving machinery and materials by the dealers. The experimental plots were examined and discussed by Dr. DeFrance and his associates. Questions which arose were answered. An old fashioned clam bake held at Aunt Carries, Point Judith, was successful. There was more than enough good food and many found that their eyes were bigger than their stomachs. I wonder how many of our greenkeepers were confronted with the problem of indigestion. On the second day of the meeting, a golf tournament took place at Point Judith, and also an inspection of disease controlled experiments, under playing conditions at the Meadowbrook Golf Club. This entire program was interestingly presented and highly educational. Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. Jack Counsell, on their 25th wedding anniversary. The Annual John Shanahan Memorial Tournament will be played on Monday, October 11, 1948. At 10:00 A.M. Notice the date. It is the Pro-Greenkeeper Tournament and is played selected drives, alternate shots. One half of the Greenkeeper's handicap will be deducted from the gross. Of each pair playing in the tournament, one of the players must be a member of either the P.G.A. or the New England Greenkeepers Club. A. J. SPERANDIO, Editor.
