Greenkeepers Cluh of New England NEWSLETTER MAY, 1949 P P W f f W P W W The 25th Anniversary of the Greenkeepers Club of N. E. was held April 6th at the Mansion Inn in Cochituate. There were 153 in attendance including many prominent guests and their wives. Mr. Geo. 0. Russell, Jr., chairman of the M.G.A. Service Section, represented the M.G.A. Prof. Lawrence S. Dickinson and Prof. G. Cornish represented the University of Mass. Dr. Jesse DeFrance and Mr. Charles Allen represented the Rhode Island State College Experiment Station. Dr. John Schredd represented the New Haven, Conn., State Experiment Station. Prof. Ray M. Koon represented the Waltham Field Station of the University of Mass. Alex Bryce, one of the founders of the Greenkeepers Club, was also present and said it felt just like coming home. Alex is now at the Atlantic City Country Club, Northfield, New Jersey. The toastmaster who introduced these and other guests was Supt. Henry R. Hayes of the Metropolitan District Police. Supt. Hayes is an old friend of the Greenkeepers and his colorful reading of the roll call of members was greeted with delight. President Phil Cassidy then made the Awards to the following Charter Members: Ted Swanson, Howard Farrant, Frank H. Wilson, Wm. McBride; R. A. Mitchell, Elmer Fuller, Joseph Oldfield and George Volmer. J. J. Fitzpatrick, D. C. Snow, Louis Moratto, Carl E. Treat and Thomas O'Leary were unable to be present but the reading of their names was given a hearty reception. James J. McCormick and Albert G. Clark, 25 year members, were duly recognized. The charter members received a lapel button denoting 25 years of membership and a lifetime desk calendar. The 25 year members received a 25 year lapel button. Entertainment and dancing followed and the evening from the cocktail hour through dinner, speeches, awards, entertainment and dancing was one of spontaneous enjoyment. The one thing missing was the absence of our treasurer Jack Counsell and his wife. Mrs. Counseli was seriously ill at that time but we are happy to announce is now on the road to recovery. At a short business meeting Geo. Webster, Greenkeeper at the Needham Golf Club, was elected an Associate Member. Howard Farrant and his Anniversary Committee deserve a hearty round of applause for their untiring work in making our 25th Anniversary Celebration a success. Anyone desiring group or head table pictures of our 25th Anniversary Banquet, may obtain them by contacting A. J. Sperandio. Cost of eachS picture is $1.00. Size 5i/ " x 14". Plans are under way for the National Turf Conference which will be held next February in Boston and the same enthusiasm which made our Anniversary so successful is necessary to help put over this coming National attraction. The May meeting will be held at the Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton, Monday, May 2nd. Luncheon will be at 12:30 noon in the Clubhouse. Plan to be there before eleven o'clock as Manny Francis is lining up a short equipment demonstration before lunch. The main feature will be the demonstration of the greatest mowing development since the gang mower. The brand new Worthington tractor with its front wheel drive, rear wheel steer, and cutting units in front of all wheels. After a short business meeting an 18 hole golf tournament will be held.
