I have asked w h a t is t h e best t h i n g to do to help to p r e v e n t W i n t e r kill on g r e e n s . The best t h i n g t h a t I know of is, w h e n b u i l d i n g y o u r g r e e n s to g r a d e t h e m so t h a t t h e y will shed all s u r f a c e water. A b o u t M a r c h 1 if t h e r e is little or no f r o s t in t h e g r o u n d and t h e g r e e n s a r e covered with loose snow, t h e n look out. At t h a t t i m e S p r i n g is coming. It shows itself n o t only on t o p of t h e g r o u n d b u t also u n d e r n e a t h . If t h e r e is no f r o s t in t h e g r o u n d and it is covered with loose snow, it s o m e t i m e s c r e a t e s a h e a t t h a t s t a r t s the g r a s s to grow, and we all know t h a t when grass c o m m e n c e s to g r o w it has got to have air. If n o t it will die, t h e r o o t s soon following. So w h e n you find y o u r g r e e n s in t h a t condition g e t t h e snow off. Dui-ing March w h e n t h e f r o s t a n d snow have l e f t the g r o u n d we somet i m e s g e t a spell of w a r m w e a t h e r . T h e g r a s s s t a r t s to grow. Quite suddenly it t u r n s cold, followed by n o r t h e a s t storms, sleet f r e e z i n g as it falls. I believe we g e t m o r e W i n t e r kill f r o m this kind of s t o r m t h a n all o t h e r causes. If t h e A g r a s s is g r o w i n g , a n d t h e sleet r e m a i n s on t h e g r e e n s m o r e t h a n a couple of days, b r e a k it u p if you possibly can. So I would advise all you G r e e n s C o m m i t t e e m e n to k e e p in "close t o u c h with y o u r G r e e n k e e p e r a t this time.
