NEWSLETTER "It is not square acres that make a great country, but square men." It is a rare occasion when the Greenkeepers can boast of playing an 18 hole round of golf in two states. That was the situation at the Haverhill Country Club during our last meeting, July 9. The layout of this course extends into New Hampshire as well as Massachusetts. The only difference noted was that the woods seemed to be denser and golf balls disappeared quicker in New Hampshire. (No Henry Long exasperators were observed over the border.) Everyone agreed that Howard Hills had the entire course in excellent condition—Fairways—Greens—Rough tip-top. This Greenkeeper-Chairman meeting was well attended. Eighty sat down to an excellent luncheon. Enthusiasm ran high and every one was especially congenial. The weather was perfect too. So this meeting goes down in the books as another one of the many successful summer gatherings. At the brief business meeting the following were voted in: Roger Wallace, Cochecko C.C., Dover, N. H.; V. Lewis Payson, Nehoiden G.C., Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass.; William D. Mahoney, Milton Hoosic G.C., Canton, Mass.; Francis Meehan, Mt. Hood G.C., Melrose, Mass. Tournament Results Greenkeeper-Chairman 2 Ball — Best Ball: 1st Net, Tie—N. Mucciarone-C, Sowerby, and J. Horton-P. Clark, 61; 3rd, J. Dinardi-H. Wischusen 62; 4th, A. Anderson-H. Billings, 63; 5th, tie—C. Connelly-D. Barry, and H. Hills-J. O'Toole, 64. Greenkeeper Singles: H. Rethman, 96-20-76; G. Tedesco, 83-6-77. The equipment demonstration started on schedule and was sponsored by: The Clapper Co., Sawtelle Bros, and Chet Baldwin (Jos. Breck). Probably the feature was the demonstration of the tractor drawn, power take-off Whirl-Wind Mower, with rock blasting ability, courtesy of Clapper Co. Chet Baldwin demonstrated the Proportioner Sprayer, and Sawtelle Bros, had on display small golf course equipment. As we have said before, the Greenkeepers appreciate these equipment displays and are mindful of the fact that it requires time and expense to present them at the various meetings. Golden Anniversary. It is always a pleasure and an honor to recognize a 50th anniversary. The Highland Country Club, Attleboro, Mass., where the Greenkeepers Club has had many enjoyable meetings, last month celebrated such an event. A noteworthy booklet covering the club's history and celebration program made interesting reading. Our old timer, the full-of-pep, Elmer Fuller, for 31 years the greenkeeper at the club, was prominently displayed and highly commended. DON'T FORGET the Greenkeepers Field Day at Kingston, R. I., Wednesday, August 22. NOTICE CHANGE OF DATES. The Annual Golf Course Superintendents Association's Golf Tournament will be held on September 10 and 11, 1951, at Purdue University Golf Course. There will also be a Field Day on the morning of September 10-11 with the tournament in the afternoon. Next Meeting of the Greenkeepers Club of New England will be Monday, August 6, at the Commonwealth Country Club, Newton, Mass., just off Commonwealth Avenue, near Boston College.
