The August meeting of the Greenkeepers Club of New England, held at the Oohasset Golf Club was a huge success! There were 82 reservations f o r lunch including 11 small f r y . Dr. O. J. Noer conducted a talk and discussion on the problems encountered in maintaining putting green truf during this unprecedented drought. O. J. told us t h a t other sections of the country were also experiencing extreme weather conditions. Correction of wilting and localized dry spots was discussed in detail. The scythe cutting contest scheduled was postponed because of the shortage of grass of a suitable length. No one objected. The buffet luncheon a t the Grove a t the edge of the plots was well attended, and Carl R. Woodward, President of the University of R. I. welcomed the group of turf men to the University. In the evening a genuine old fashioned chicken barbecue was held at the Point Judith Country Club. This was the fitting climax to an eventful day. Following the fine buffet luncheon 21 members and guests entered the 18 hole Medal Play tournament. Others toured the course while some of the members, their wives and children spent the afternoon a t the beaches. Rumor has it t h a t Jack Counsel spent t h e a f t e r noon inspecting the sands of Nantasket. Informal speeches were given by "Mr. Golf" of Rhode Island, Charles Hartley, Secretary of the R. I. Golf Association, and Mr. Rice, Pres. of the Pt. Judith Country Club and head of the Caddie Fund in R. I. who welcomed us to Point Judith. Mr. Rice commended Johnny Tucker superintendent a t Point Judith, f o r his work in maintaining the Pt. Judith Club in its usual fine condition through this trying season. The following day a golf tournament was held a t the Warwick Country Club where Paul O'Leary has nine new holes under construction. This is a beautiful spot on Na r r a g a n s e t Bay. Paul has a fine nursery of a mixture of C 1, 19 and 27 which he will use on the nine new greens. A buffet luncheon was served a t noon. Results of the tournament held here have not been reported as yet. Those in the Golf Tournament found C'ohasset one of the most pleasant courses to play. Joe Oldfield had t h e course in fine shape despite the drought. Winners of the Tournament were: The Mucciarone combine f r o m Wayland and Lexington, each brother carding a 67 for first net. Second net was also a tie with John Latvis of Tatnuck and Ted Garrison of Ludlow posting a 68. This will be held September 8. There will be a snack at 10:30 A.M. with golf starting at 12 noon sharp, including the Club Championship, followed by dinner at 6:00 P.M. This event promises to be one you won't forget. This is the expression used in the invitation f r o m Ludlow. John incidentally, is rebuilding some of his green. This should be of interest to those not playing golf. A business meeting will follow the dinner a t 6:00 P.M. The Twenty-First Annual Greenkeepers Field Day at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experimental Station at Kingston was also a huge success. I t was held on August 20 and 21. Get your Pro lined up f o r the John Shanahan Memorial Tournament at Brea Burn, October 6. This follows the Cape tournament, so remind your P r o of this date early. Door prizes were won by Dr. Jesse DeFrance, Arthur Cody, and John Dombek. The experimental work that Dr. De France and his staffare doing at Kingston is recognized by everyone interested in turf as being an outstanding contribution to Golf. As usual Dr. DeFrance apparently had inside information on picking fine weather for this occasion. It would be impossible to give the highlights on all the experimental work being done by Dr. DeFrance, but needless to say, everyone interested in the growing of fine turf realizes the importance of attending this annual occasion. Exhibits of modern equipment and material for maintaining fine turf were represented by prominent commercial companies. Homer Darling is progressing with the construction of his new nine holes at Juniper Hill and an announcement will be made shortly concernig the planting of the nine greens. Those interested in seeing their name in print should find it on the reverse of this Newsletter where a list of members in good standing is printed. DON'T FORGET!
