Tuesday, June 9, 1953, will be long remembered in the Worcester area. The big twister struck quickly, unexpectedly, with fury and ferocity beyond imagination, leaving death and destruction in its wake. It appeared to be-just another thunder storm approaching. Here at Juniper Hill, five miles from the storm's path we heard a vicious terrific wind high in the sky like many jet planes. Then it faded away. Then followed the largest hail stones ever seen. Then rain. Then a shower of debris, splintered boards 2-10 feet long, shingles and slate covered the landscape far and wide. A few golfers arrived who had passed through the wake of the storm. They were sober and solemn from what they had seen. We didn't realize the grimness of it all until the next day. Pictures told part of the story but ne one can possibly comprehend the devastation, the destruction, the terribleness of this tornado until they have seen what happened in its path. Complete destruction of trees, houses, and automobiles in a path five hundred yards wide more or less. It carne without warning and passed through in a matter of minutes. It was unbelievable. What havoc! All golf courses in this area except Westbhro C. C. escaped with little or no damage. The Westboro Club was in its path and lost many trees, shed roofs, and damage to the club house and several greens. Our sympathy goes out to the Westboro Club and to all others who suffered losses. It's difficult enough to battle the ntormal annual problems on a golf course but impossible to combat a tornado. What a turnout we had at Vespers at our last meeting June 1. It was a gala day all around. Perfect weather, an excellent equipment demon- stration, grand hospitality and a golf course in superb condition. Even a helicopter dropped in for a look see. We saw in action the Scythette with chain saw attachment, the Verti-Cut thatch remover, the Aerifier, the Atdoi greens mower, the Ryan power sod cutter, a power cross cutter pf sod and the Bonica Power brush. There was lively interest shown in all this equipment and the boys appreciated the show. Some sort of a record must have been established with the large attendance. Approximately 113 sat down to the luncheon. Incidentally, only about 40 return cards had been received. Somebody had to do stole quick thinking and acting to handle this increase. 148 door prize tickets were sold and the winners were: Dave Klein, New Bedford Municipal; C. Piantedosi, Commonwealth; H. Clauson, Blue Hill; and C. Daly, Haverhill C. C. The winners of the four ball-Best ball tournament were: 1st Net 62—Butler, Mahoney, Cox, Hariman. 2nd Net 67—Simartia, Hessemans, E. Hannon. 3rd Net 68 — Mitchell, Bnodd, Klein, Brown. 4th Net—Muscioroni, Dicco, Davis. At the business meeting two new associate members were voted in, Clayton Daly, Haverhill C. C. and John Sperandio, Marlboro C. C. One associate member will be voted on at the next meeting, Donald Kelleher, Cedar Hill Golf Club, Sttoghton, Mass. FINAL REMINDER.
