As o f t e n as needed, d e p e n d s on play. Greenkeeper should only c h a n g e cup w h e n he has no one else to do i t ; should have m a n t r a i n e d f o r t h i s p u r pose. The m a t t e r of w h e t h e r a club should have its own shop w i t h a mechanic or should send its mowers, etc., to r e p a i r ' shops w a s discussed a t length. Machine r y m u s t be looked a f t e r in either case. Men s h a r p e n i n g m o w e r s m u s t know how to do i t ; service shop does b e t t e r job usually. Subject seems one f o r individual club to decide. The s u b j e c t of w h e t h e r a club buying labor-saving m a c h i n e r y should lay off t h e labor saved, or should use t h e labor available to do other neglected t h i n g s , and hence r a i s e t h e s t a n d a r d s of m a i n t e n a n c e , b r o u g h t out much c o m m e n t in f a v o r of u s i n g t h e labor saved to g e t t h e very essential " p u t t e r i n g " w o r k done. T h e background of our whole l i f e is t h e l a n d s c a p e ; t h e m a n who doesn't love his landscape h a s some m o r a l q u a l i t y g r e a t l y lacking. E a c h one of us is actually selling his landscape to h i s customers. In o r d e r to promote our own business and make business pay, we m u s t sell t h e l a n d s c a p e — w e must love the landscape ourselves in order to sell it—to love it we m u s t see it, and u n d e r s t a n d it. In m a n y rock g a r d e n s t h e r e is too much g a r d e n and not enough rock; t h e best possible a r r a n g e m e n t of t h e rocks is necessary to s t a r t a rock g a r d e n . One should a d m i r e and u n d e r s t a n d rocks as well as t h e plants. Rock g a r d e n s a r e not as simple as most people t h i n k ; ecological conditions a r e d r i e r t h a n most kinds of gardens. Nature groups plants with shape of practically circle, high in cent e r , lower a r o u n d t h e edge. T h e r e is some logic in all t h i s l a n d s c a p e ; we m u s t study it to enable us to m a k e bett e r studies of our own. T h e second s p e a k e r w a s P r o f . F . A. McLaughlin, S t a t e Seed A n a l y s t . Seed t e s t i n g w a s described, and t h e laws f o r seed t e s t i n g discussed. Seed a n a l y s t s a r e coming more to t h e use of soil in t h e l a b o r a t o r y f o r g e r m i n a t i o n tests, half g a r d e n soil sterilized and half sand. Reason is t h a t seed m i g h t not h a v e v i t a l i t y to f o r m p l a n t in t h e soil, b u t it m i g h t h a v e enough vitality to t h r o w out p a r t of p l a n t in wet f i l t e r p a p e r test. In f u t u r e no seed is to be called g e r m i n a t e d unless root and cotyledon both develop. Because of t i m e r e q u i r e d and lack of help, a m o n t h is usually needed f o r a test. T h e p r o g r a m S a t u r d a y m o r n i n g included f o u r round table discussions, to be reported in f u t u r e issues. A t t h e a f t e r n o o n conference, Mr. Talbot C. Chase, P r e s i d e n t of t h e Massa c h u s e t t s Golf Association, spoke on t h e aims of t h e M. G. A. The p r o g r a m in mind is with idea of accomplishing something, and doing good. Condition of a course is j u s t as much a p a r t of t h e g a m e as any o t h e r ; p l e a s u r e of t h e g a m e is l a r g e l y dependent on t h e condition of t h e course. I t w a s recommended a t t h e l a s t a n n u a l m e e t i n g t h a t t h e M. G. A. t a k e over t h e Service B u r e a u . T h e officials have enough ambition to increase t h e a c t i v i t i e s ; t h e opp o r t u n i t y is h e r e to t a k e over t h e golf course m a i n t e n a n c e work which t h e Service B u r e a u h a s done. Steps to advance a r e v a g u e as yet. More revenue needed, p r o p e r personel. A r a i s e of dues is being asked to include a Greens Section of t h e M. G. A. I m p o r t a n t f a c t o r is cooperation f r o m all f a c t i o n s . Special committee should be organized, including r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of t h e clubs, Greenkeepers Club. P u r p o s e is to provide s o m e t h i n g good f o r m e m b e r clubs. F u n c t i o n s of t h i s Green Section should be i n f o r m a t i o n r a t h e r t h a n buying. T h e local club should be t h e best j u d g e of w h e r e it should buy, b u t prices would be k e p t on file a t t h e Greens Section. Mr. F r a n c i s O u i m e t gave his ideas of a low h a n d i c a p p l a y e r ' s views on t u r f m a i n t e n a n c e . The good p l a y e r is v e r y sensitive, doesn't blame himself for high scores b u t blames t h e condition of t h e g r e e n s . Mr. O u i m e t paid a t r i b u t e to g r e e n k e e p e r s in g e n e r a l caying he has always found greens in first class shape. He has noticed that many good golfers complain of certain stolon greens, which have a g r a i n . T h e p u t t i n g touch on one g r e e n on a course should be O. K. f o r t h e o t h e r greens. E n g l i s h and Scotch g r e e n s a r e splendid to p u t t on; n a t u r e of t u r f is such t h a t a p u t t i n g g r e e n could be built on the f a i r w a y s . It is impossible to see f r o m t h e point w h e r e a drive lands w h e r e t h e g r e e n and f a i r w a y come t o g e t h e r . P u t t i n g g r e e n s a b r o a d a r e immense in size. W a t e r is essential a t all s t a g e s in l i f e of t h e p l a n t . Seed m u s t be kept moist f o r time required to g e r m i n ate. Best time f o r seeding is t h u s d u r ing time w h e n r a i n f a l l is liable to be ample. Most critical period is a t s t a g e when p l a n t h a s s t a r t e d . All of t h e w a t e r in t h e soil is not available f o r t h e p l a n t . The available w a t e r content v a r i e s g r e a t l y w i t h t h e soil. Add clay or o r g a n i c m a t t e r to i n c r e a s e m o i s t u r e holding capacity. E a s t e r n soils a r e u s u ally deficient in o r g a n i c m a t t e r , which is very desirable. Drainage keeps g r o u n d w a t e r a t same level, hence improves root development. T h e r e is good evidence t h a t s t r o n g acidity retards w a t e r absorption. Sufficient phosphoric acid m a k e s root development good. P l a n t s can be h a r m e d by a n excess of N i t r o g e n . Q u a n t i t y of w a t e r r e q u i r e d isn't v e r y g r e a t ; little is known a t present concerning loss by e v a p o r a t i o n . H e i g h t of cut affects d e p t h of root s y s t e m ; f a i r w a y s o f t e n a r e c u t too short. The w e a r i n g q u a l i t y of g r a s s is very i m p o r t a n t .
