NEWSLETTER M A R C H 1954 wmmt Something new, something different, something beneficial, always attracts and holds one's attention. That's what happened at our Greenskeepers Club meeting at Waltham, February 8. Dr. Haertl, the research division, of the Bernsworth Chemical Company, Framingham, Mass. presented us with a most interesting talk on chelate chemistry (pronounced key-late) with emphasis on Iron Chelate and Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid, for short E.D.T.A. If there is an iron deficiency in your golf course soil the mottled yellowing of the grass blades may be iron chlorosis. Versene Iron Chelate may be applied to the soil where this iron complex may be readily absorbed and assimilated by the root system of the plant. Versene Iron Chelate has been an outstanding success in overcoming iron deficiencies in citrus trees and restoring sick, defoliated, non bearing trees to normal profitable bearing trees. Amazing results have also been obtained experimentally with vegetable crops, lawns, and golf greens. So watch this product gentlemen. It is likely to help us tremendously. Also later to come you may see helpful results with other chelated compounds of manganese, zinc, copper and other metals. Thanks to our educational committee chairman, Tony Sperandio, for another interesting and educational afternoon. This was another step u p w a r d on the stairs of progress and education in our field of endeavor. By the way, take note that a real surprise is in store for us for the next meeting at Waltham— March 1. Tony hasn't disclosed what it is but you, can count on him. Everyone must agree too that the luncheons are always excellent. W e are most fortunate in having such a good setup at Waltham. It makes for good fellowship. It is about time also that a plug was p u t in for our caterer, Luther Witham, Inc., phone Lynn 2-5581. You can't go wrong in recommending this outfit to your friends, your church, your lodge. The winners of the attendance prizes were not recorded at the last meeting. Why? The editor was so flabbergasted at being a first time winner he forgot there were two other winners. Sorry. H o w many were inspired this month or had just a bit of that latent patriotism stirred u p by three big birthdays. Edison — Lincoln — Washington. W h a t these three great Americans have contributed to our heritage and what it means to us is worth our meditation. W e should never let them down in our thinking and in our actions. And what about the wife's valentine? She appreciated that little thought didn't she? Here is a little verse for our new treasurer, Sam Mitchell, and others who can use it: FORGETTING Forgetting is the only way, Forget the storms of yesterday; Forget the trials you have had, Forget the weather, if it's bad, Forget you're not a millionaire, Forget the gray streaks in your hair, Forget you ever had the blues, BUT D O N ' T F O R G E T T O PAY YOUR DUES. Speaking of public address systems our new mike is working all right don't you think? Our new prexi I mean. W e understand one of our former presidents, Harold Mosher, is on the road to recovery. W e are all pleased to hear this Harold and hope you will be back with us soon. Don't forget—-BIG SURPRISE—Waltham Field Station—March 1—Twelve O'clock. Don't miss this one. The guest speakers at the March 1st meeting at the Waltham field station will be Mr. Orville Clapper and Mr. John B. Starkweather, who will give short talks on water systems. Also Mr. Orrin E. Smith and Mr. A! Zikorus, who will discuss golf course construction problems. This will be a great opportunity for any one with these two problems to get some real authentic information. Tony has worked hard to get the program together, so lets fill up the place, H. DARLING, Editor
