WMMUBMSmNKSBSm NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 1954 It couldn't have been a more beautiful day for our last outdoor meeting held at Hyannisport October 25. It was just perfect. The sky was clear blue, Old Sol had a warm smile, and the visibility was exceptional—One of the few days in the year on the Cape when distant points could be easily seen. Some of the boys noted that Provincetown could be seen from Plymouth some thirty miles away. From the Hyannisport parking space, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket islands were clearly visible. So the boys who attended this meeting were most fortunate in experiencing this rare day in October. John Milton once wrote, "In those vernal seasons of the year when the air is calm and pleasant, it were an injury and sullenness against nature not to go out and see her riches and partake in her rejoicing with heaven and earth". The Hyannisport Club House and first tee is located on a bluff overlooking the entire course and what a view. From this vantage point one could well imagine the anxious thoughts in the minds of George Rommell and the club members when hurricane wet Edna passed over, seeing the salt water completely covering the several low greens in the valley. No electricity and flood waters completely knocked out the water system. A bucket brigade of 50 caddies was quickly mobilized to apply fresh water to the greens when the salt water had subsided. This apparently saved the situation because the greens had recovered splendidly. George Rommell is to be congratulated for the excellent condition of the entire course. A goodly number entered the tournament and for the better players this was the club championship. There were many good shots and quite a few wild ones. Ducks were scared from the water holes, snipe were flushed from the marshes, and new marks appeared on the trees and when the dusk had settled a new champion was crowned. John Sperandio did it with a gross 80. Bert Clark was the runner up with 82. Then 1st net Dave Barry 69, 2nd net Sam Mitchell 70, 3rd net Joe Butler 71, 4th net tie C. Cappozzi and H, Darling 74, 5th net A. J. Sperandio 75, 6th net tie P. O'Leary and Albert Allen. Everyone enjoyed the course, the day and the championship. HOT SHOTS FROM THE ROUGH. There are various interpretations of the golf rules. Rule 17-3. Moving Fixed or Growing Objects Prohibited. One contestant having some recollection of this rule found his ball stymied by a pine sapling. An accommodating nearby workman cleaning up hurricane debris with a power saw gladly removed the obstacle. It was observed that Arthur Anderson had the sandwich concession for the day. He gave good service too, delivering in person on the course and on the double. Two carloads of Greenkeepers arriving on the outskirts of Hyannis with a lost look received a warm welcome and a special escort to the course by the town police. No arrests were made—just local courtesy being demonstrated. BRIEF NOTES ON THE BUSINESS MEETING. Richard Blake was voted an associate member . . . President O'Grady appointed the following nominating committee to report a slate of officers at the December meeting: H. Darling, P. Cassidy, P. O'Leary, H. Johnson, Tony Sperandio, and A. Anderson . . . It was suggested that a definite chore be given to the three Vice-Presidents of the club to serve as a membership investigating committee. Take off your coats V.P.'s. Fittingly this meeting ended for adjournment to the Hyannis Cape Cod Inn just as the bright red sun was sinking below the ocean horizon. They time things right for the Cape Cod visitors. A most enjoyable meal at the Cape Cod Inn was the final event of a full and successful day. Ralph Thomas wishes to thank all club members for a good cheer basket of fruit. It is good to hear that Ralph is now improving steadily. Stay in the fairway now Ralph. This Newsletter is being prepared Thanksgiving Eve, too late for an appropriate and timely message but we hope all of you thoroughly enjoyed this significant holiday, eating turkey and fixings, visiting with Mom and Pop, son and daughter, or the girl friend. It might be suggested that special thanks not only be reserved for Thanksgiving Day but for every day of the year. "O Lord, who lends me life, lend me a heart replete with thanksgiving."—Shakespeare. Our next meeting will be held at the Waltham Field Station, Monday, December 6. It will be a dealers meeting and special guests will be present to take part in the program. Dr. Colby, Prof. Dickinson and his new assistant, Dr. Roberts. A hot Roast Tenderloin luncheon will be served at 12:00 noon. DON'T MISS IT.
