POWER CUTTING GREEN VS. H A N D MOWING MOWING I have o f t e n asked myself t h e question w h e t h e r p o w e r p u t t i n g g r e e n mowers a r e economical. We'll t a k e t h e t h r e e u n i t m o w e r first. I t is said b y t h e a g e n t s t h a t t h i s m o w e r will mow a g r e e n of 6000 s q u a r e f e e t in t e n m i n u t e s ; this is c e r t a i n l y s a v i n g t i m e , b u t never once do t h e a g e n t s m e n tion t h e t i m e g e t t i n g t h e m o w e r r e a d y , g e t t i n g to t h e first g r e e n , t h e time gett i n g f r o m g r e e n to g r e e n , as well as gett i n g b a c k t o t h e tool house, cleaning it u p and p u t t i n g it a w a y , all of which is c o u n t e d in h a n d m o w i n g ; f o r , f r o m the] t i m e I tell t h e m e n to mow t h e g r e e n s until t h e m o w e r s a r e back in p l a c e in t h e tool house is c h a r g e d to m o w i n g g r e e n s . I have figured t h e time, other t h a n act u a l c u t t i n g , a n d find it a b o u t as f o l l o w s : g e t t i n g m o w e r r e a d y and g e t t i n g to first g r e e n , 15 m i n u t e s ; f r o m g r e e n to .green, 5 to 7 m i n u t e s , a n d f r o m last g r e e n c u t u n t i l t h e m o w e r is p u t away, 10 m i n u t e s ; in o t h e r words, if a m a n has'- t h r e e g r e e n s to cut, he spends m o r e t h a n half an h o u r other t h a n a c t u a l c u t t i n g , all of which is c h a r g e d to m o w i n g g r e e n s . This is an a v e r a g e of m o r e t h a n t e n m i n u t e s p e r green. Now if m y m e m o r y serves m e r i g h t , a t B r a e b u r n two y e a r s ago, i t t o o k a m a n with t h e m a c h i n e m e n t i o n e d above f i f t e e n m i n u t e s t o m o w a g r e e n ; this is half t h e t i m e a g a i n as toldi b y t h e a g e n t s . This, of course, is still saving time. Now, t h e r e a r e two w a y s to m o w a g r e e n with t h i s m a c h i n e , t h e circular w a y , and by dividing t h e g r e e n in h a l f , s t a r t i n g f r o m t h e side of t h e g r e e n to m o w one half and as you come a r o u n d to t h e c e n t e r , i n s t e a d of c o n t i n u i n g t o m o w t h e same h a l f , cross over a n d mow a strip on t h e c e n t e r side of t h e opposite h a l f . B u t in this w a y , as well as in t h e c i r c u l a r way, t h e r e is always a p a r t of t h e g r e e n t h a t has g o t to be gone over a second t i m e or m o r e , t h u s m a k i n g one p a r t of a g r e e n f a s t e r t h a n t h e other, a n d a g r e e n which is n o t t r u e b e c a u s e of such, and which p e r h a p s will be noticed by t h e f e w , on e v e r y course, who a r e f a r quicker to find a f a u l t t h a n a perfection . Now, while I have p o i n t e d out w h a t I call t h e d i s a d v a n t a g e s of this m o w e r , I a m still m i n d f u l of t h e f a c t t h a t to those who care little a b o u t t h e a p p e a r ance of a g r e e n , this m o w e r is t h e bigg e s t t i m e - s a v e r I k n o w of.
