" I n - a s m u c h as I had t h e p l e a s u r e and o p p o r t u n i t y to address t h i s association a t t h e M a s s a c h u s e t t s A g r i c u l t u r a l College a t A m h e r s t , I do not t h i n k it is a g a i n n e c e s s a r y to r e p e a t in detail, how t h e N a t i o n a l Association of Greenkeepers of A m e r i c a came into existence, and t h i s a f t e r n o o n I do not care to t a k e u p too much of your valuable time, f o r I am v e r y anxious to have you h e a r a f e w words f r o m each member of o u r executive committee. " T h e m e m b e r s of t h i s committee cover a l a r g e t e r r i t o r y , and I believe t h a t a f t e r they have all given a f e w rem a r k s , you will observe t h a t we a r e practically all of one mind. A., I i n f o r m e d Ganson Depew, C h a i r m a n t h a t he had made an excellent choice; and I t r u s t t h a t he m a y live a good m a n y y e a r s to e n j o y t h e honor conf e r r e d upon him. "Believing t h a t a m o n g those p r e s e n t h e r e this a f t e r n o o n , some m a y h a v e been absent f r o m h e a r i n g my address a t A m h e r s t , I will roughly outline a f e w of our Aims and Objects. In the first place I m a y s t a t e t h a t T h e N a t i o n a l Association has n o t h i n g w h a t e v e r to do w i t h district associations. We believe in homs rule f o r d i s t r i c t s ; our association simply deals with t h e individual greenkeeper and pro-greenkeeper whom we believe a r e w o r t h y of m e m b e r s h i p into our organization. A g r e e n k e e p e r before m a k i n g an application f o r m e m b e r s h i p in our association m u s t have a t least t h r e e y e a r s experience; likewise a progreenkeeper m u s t have five y e a r s experience. Our financial resources a r e well over $10,000, and we h a v e no liabilities. We p a y to t h e beneficiary of a deceased member t h e s u m of $250 immediately u p o n s a t i s f a c t o r y proof of death. We give to our m e m b e r s in distress financial assistance. " W e h a v e played a p r o m i n e n t p a r t along p r a c t i c a l lines and have aided a n u m b e r of our m e m b e r s who h a v e lost t h e i r positions in s e c u r i n g new courses. COOPERATION I n 1924 t h e Greenkeepers Club of N e w E n g l a n d w a s f o r m e d , t h e first org a n i z a t i o n of its kind in t h e c o u n t r y . Since t h e n we have held in t h e neighborhood of 160 meetings. We h a v e played golf on a g r e a t m a n y courses, h a v e h a d indoor meetings a t which s p e a k e r s took u p t h e problems of t h e golf course. I n J u n e 1929 t h e first issue of t h e Newsl e t t e r w a s published. I n t h a t time, n e a r l y eight years, h a v e we p r o g r e s s e d ? H a s t h e r e been any cooperation? A r e golf courses any b e t t e r k e p t ? A r e w e a n y better g r e e n k e e p e r s ? In 1924 t h e only scientific r e s e a r c h along golf lines w a s done by t h e Green Section a t W a s h i n g t o n . Since t h e n we h a v e had e x p e r i m e n t w o r k u n d e r t a k e n a t t h e S t a t e College, a school f o r greenkeepers. Much of t h i s w o r k h a s been u n d e r t a k e n because of t h e d e m a n d s of t h e greenkeepers. T h e N e w s l e t t e r so ably edited by M r . W e s t h a s been an added f a c t o r in o u r progress. Go back t h r o u g h y o u r files and observe how m a n y valuable articles a r e printed in its pages. W h a t is t h e n e x t step f o r w a r d ? W h a t e v e r it is, we h a v e done p r e t t y well so f a r , so w h y not tackle it ourselves and not sit a r o u n d h o p i n g some one will solve our problems f o r us. Most of us live w i t h our golf course t h e best p a r t of t h e y e a r , we know it i n t i m a t e l y , we know t h e poorly d r a i n e d greens, w h e r e brown p a t c h will s t r i k e first and a h u n dred and one t h i n g s t h a t no e x p e r t can tell us. It is knowledge acquired t h r o u g h experience. Is t h a t experience valuable? I t h i n k we all will g r a n t t h a t scientific r e s e a r c h w o r k is as i m p o r t a n t in our line of endeavor as in a n y other. We all welcome it and no one is kicking about a n y knowledge which will help h i m out of his troubles. W h e r e is t h e p r o p e r place to conduct golf e x p e r i m e n t w o r k ? A golf course. A f a i r w a y e x p e r i m e n t on a piece of t u r f which h a s never had a t r a c t o r r u n over it or a g r e e n s experiment on a plot t h a t h a s never h a d t h e w e a r and t e a r and t r a m p i n g of g o l f e r s over it, tells v e r y little. So lets g e t tog e t h e r and c o m p a r e notes. We m a y m a k e s n a p j u d g e m e n t b u t some one will check us up. Some of our troubles of t h e p a s t s u m m e r w e r e t h e uncontrolable w e a t h e r conditions. Some w e r e due to inefficient methods. L e t s check u p and see if we w e r e as efficient as we m i g h t have been. I have h e a r d some speak in f a v o r , others a g a i n s t t h i s t i m e f o r w a t e r i n g , p e r h a p s t h i s n o t e will arouse some o t h e r m e m b e r to tell us w h y t h e t i m e t h e y w a t e r is best f o r them. K n o w i n g t h a t t h e E d i t o r of t h e N E W S L E T T E R h a s o f t e n had difficulty in g e t t i n g sufficient m a t e r i a l f r o m t h e members, I a m sending along these r a m b l i n g notes to help. Wilson N E W WORK AT T H E MINUTE MAN CHANGES AT THE COUNTRY CLUB W e have m a d e n u m e r o u s c h a n g e s during the past year here at the Country Club. F o u r g r e e n s h a v e been changed, not in location, b u t in shape, size, and contour, w i t h v a r i o u s t r a p s worked into t h e picture. On two of these g r e e n s we used t u r f f r o m our nurseries, on t h e o t h e r s t h e original t u r f w a s used. We h a v e done a g r e a t deal r e m o v i n g knolls and, as we a r e mostly on ledge, it is work t h a t t a k e s time, b u t we feel these changes h a v e m a d e t h e p l a y e r s m u c h more satisfied. We h a v e changed over a n u m b e r of t r a p s on t h e course, b'lilt n n u m b e r of new t e e s ; also by c h a n g i n g t h e lines of our f a i r w a y s , we have b r o u g h t into play t r a p s which w e r e before out of line. Along t h e first of J u l y we decided t h a t any w a t e r i n g w e did w a s to be done a t n i g h t , t h a t is f r o m six o'clock to t e n or eleven. On t h e twenty-seven holes, t h r e e men handled i t v e r y nicely; of course, we h a d considerable rain t h i s season, b u t t h r e e or f o u r times w a t e r w a s needed, and f r o m t h e r e s u l t s t h a t n i g h t w a t e r i n g g a v e us, w e a r e all f o r it. The g r e e n s had a much b e t t e r cushion effect, and looked b e t t e r in every w a y t h a n w h e n we used to do e a r l y m o r n i n g w a t e r i n g . I also f e e l t h a t n i g h t w a t e r i n g h a s k e p t us p r a c t i cally f r e e f r o m scald. We h a d some b r o w n - p a t c h , b u t I do n o t blame it to n i g h t w a t e r i n g . I do t h i n k one can overw a t e r to do serious h a r m , b u t to me t h e The Minute M a n Golf Club, s i t u a t e d on Concord Avenue, Lexington, w a s opened in J u n e 1931. Nine g r e e n s w e r e p u t into play and in A u g u s t , work w a s s t a r t e d on the l a s t nine. To date, f o u r g r e e n s and t h r e e f a i r w a y s h a v e been completed and a r e going into t h e w i n t e r w i t h a fine coat of g r a s s , t h a n k s to t h e F a l l seeding which responded splendidly. T h e subsoil of t h e " M i n u t e M a n " consists of blue gravel, on which w a s laid t h e f o u n d a t i o n f o r t h e greens. A f t e r t h e r o u g h s h a p i n g and g r a d i n g of t h e greens w a s completed t h e y w e r e heavily rolled to i n s u r e a firm base. To t h i s b a s e w a s added an eight-inch seed bed, comprising six inches of one-inch screened loam topped w i t h two inches of one q u a r t e r inch screened loam. This w a s allowed to s t a n d f o r a week to t e n days to d e t e r m i n e a n y settling or weed g r o w t h t h a t m i g h t occur. J u s t p r i o r to seeding, t h e g r e e n s w e r e firmly rolled and r a k e d and rolled a g a i n until t h e soil w a s firm, y e t not packed. This process decreases t h e possibility of pockets and u n n e c e s s a r y u n d u l a t i o n s which m i g h t otherwise f o r m .
