NEWSLETTER D E C E M B E R - 1 9 5 7 T h e December meeting of the Association was held at the Waltham Field Station, Monday, December second. There were sixty members present and many dealers attended in order to hear Dr. Elliot Roberts of the University of Massachusetts speak on the future plans of the Agronomy Department at the University. Dr. Roberts introduced Professor Joseph Troll, a full time member of his staff at Amherst. Professor Troll's work will deal with turf and soil problems. Diagnostic service will be available. T h e Winter School will be an eight week program followed by the Annual Spring Conference. A tentative schedule for the Spring Conference is that the meetings and lunches will be held in the new Student Union building followed by the customary banquet at Northampton. T h e schedule will be set up so that everyone will find it a must to attend both days of the conference. Panel participation appears to be the right approach for holding interest and attendance at a maximum. Dr. Roberts stated that plans were being made to conduct research and other experimental work on a golf course under actual playing conditions. T h e benefit and possibility of a State or New England T u r f Council was discussed. It was pointed out that Turf Conferences, journals and the association with other Superintendents is of importance in that order to future superintendents, "there are many successful men who were self-educated but their replacements will be college graduates," so stated Dr. Roberts.
