T h e Directors and Winter School Committee met with Dr. Havis before lunch and a final program of speakers for the March 4 and 5 th refresher course was presented. T h e program follows: March 4 10:00 a.m. Welcome by Manuel Francis, President of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England. 10:15 a.m. Introduction by Professor Lawrence Dickinson. 10:30 a.m. Turf Renovation and Strains of Grasses by Alexander M. Radko, North East Director of the U.S.G.A. Greens section. 12:30 Catered Lunch. Reynolds, John Connors, Guy Tedesco and Cassidy. Phil Dealers present announced price lists, new materials, etc. Norman Keyes, District Manager at Waltham of the U. S. Social Security Administration, the main speaker, gave an unusually informative talk on the qualifications and benefits under the Social Security Act. This talk was extremely interesting and time alone brought an end to the questions presented to and answered by Mr. Keyes. Incidentally, this subject can be presented to any interested group upon request at your District Social Security Office. Help for the work being done to promote golf at Veterans Hospitals was discussed. There are five Golf Clubs looking for qualified Superintendents. Get in touch with the Secretary if you are interested. 1:30 p.m. Weed control — Panel of Superintendents, Moderator, Dr. John Havis, Director of the Waltham Field Station. Panel: Manuel Francis, Philip I. Cassidy, Albert Allen and Richard Silvar. Two applications for Associate membership will be voted on at the next meeting. They are: Leo R. Brow, Supt. at the Commonwealth C. C. and R. Joseph Dandurand, Supt. at the Maynard C. C. 3:00 p.m. Trees on Golf Courses Dr. M. A. McKenzie of the Univ. of Mass. T h e Treasurer announced that on January 1, 1957 our membership totaled 106. 4:00 p.m. Turf Research at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Elliot C. Roberts, Univ. of Massachusetts. We regret to announce that Alex Ohlson formerly Supt. at the Lexington Golf Club and a former member and Director of this Association passed away suddenly February 3rd in Florida. March 5 9:30 a.m. Insects — Prof. W. D. Whitcomb, University of Massachusetts, Field Station at Waltham. 10 :30 a.m. Diseases — Dr. William Klomparens, The Upjohn Company. 12:30 Catered Lunch. 1:30 p.m. Soils and Fertilizers, Dr. William G. Colby, University of Massachusetts. 2:30 p.m. High Lights of Conference by A. M. Radko, U.S.G.A. All members have received a return card which should be filled in and mailed immediately. There were 64 members and guests at the meeting. Door prizes were won by Dick Finnerty, Ralph Compulsory membership in the National Association was discussed and will again be brought up for discussion. "We need each other!" Here are some pertinent facts to remember: 1. The next regular meeting (a short one) will be held at the Waltham Field Station, March 4 at 9 A.M. just one half hour before the Refresher course starts. 2. If you do not send in your return card for the Refresher Course — come anyway! but — you won't be served any Lunch! Capacity of the hall at Waltham is 200 plus — Let's help fill it! P H I L I P I.
