NEWS LETTER x GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION OF NEW ENGLAND The Annual meeting of the Golf Course Superintendents' Association of New England was held Monday, January 7th, at the Waltham Field Station. Weatherwise is was not the best for travel and our attendance was the smallest in many years. However, twenty-three hardy souls did attend and, to belie the bad travel statement, Dr. Colby and Dr. Roberts drove in from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. As usual, a fine luncheon was served and in view of the fact of the small gathering, several who never quite are filled up had to call it quits. Guests at the luncheon were Dr. Havis, Dr. Colby, Dr. Roberts and several of the office staff at the Field Station. Attendance prizes were won by Mario Finizia, Alex Ohlson, Mary Lally (staff) and Michael O'Grady. At the meeting Dr. Colby and Dr. Roberts explained the Winter School was dropped this season because of the lack of teaching staff and room facilities. Dr. Colby assured us that Dr. Sieling had stated the Winter School would certainly be reinstated in 1958. Dr. Havis assured the Superintendents that the facilities of the Field Station would be available for a two day refresher course, tenatively, March 4th and 5th, 1957. Orville Clapper extended the services of his office for any printing or mailing necessary for programs or notices. Discussion was held on attendance of the National Turf Conference and Show at Louisville, February 10-15. We are sorry to report that it appears that only 12 are going from our organization. At the business meeting Mario Finizia, Superintendent at the Wanamoisett Country Club, was elected a regular member. J A N U A R Y ' 1 9 5 7 Arthur E. Anderson and Philip I. SCHOOL IS NOT OUT! On Monday, January 14th, Arthur Anderson, Robert Grant, Richard Blake, Richard Silvar, Manuel Francis and Philip Cassidy met with Dr. Havis, Dr. Colby and Dr. Roberts at the Waltham Field Station. Dr. Sieling phoned his assurance to us through Dr. Havis that he would exert every effort to see that the Winter School would be reinstated in 1958. At this meeting a tentative two day schedule covering all up to date features of fine turf management was set up for March 4th and 5th. The speakers and panels should be terrific. The details will be worked out before the February meeting, but don't forget the dates. March 4th, incidentally, will be a regular meeting date. The February meeting will be held Monday, February 4th, at the Waltham Field Station. Luncheon will be at 12:30 noon. There will be a meeting of the by-law committee at 10:30 A.M. There will be a speaker at the regular meeting plus discussion on making membership in the National Association compulsory as it is in nearly all sectional organizations. Committees will be appointed by President Manuel Francis. If you want to be on a committee you should certainly be there, and if you don't want to be on a committee you just better attend! Please excuse the omission of the editorial section as the Editor is taking his annual sojourn to the balmy south. PHILIP I. CASSIDY, Business Manager
