NEWSLETTER GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION OF NEW ENGLAND MAY, "It is not a merit to tolerate, to be intolerant." but rather a crime Shelley Webster says, "Tolerance is the disposition to be patient and fair toward those whose opinions or practices differ from one's own. Look fellows, this is not intended to be a lecture but just a few frank words for the good of the association. The editor refers to the chaotic moments that prevailed during the business meeting held at Woodland. The gremlins were certainly working overtime stirring up conflicting ideas at that meeting. The editor purposely stayed on the side lines to listen and observe and this was what ran through his mind at that time. It is a healthy situation seeing so many members expressing opinions. Normally, it is difficult to stir up ideas and nothing should be said or done to discourage it. BUT a bit of caution might be suggested —and that is to THINK before speaking. "The sober second dom wrong" thought of the people is selM. Van Buren. It is the easiest thing in the world to criticize something or somebody, and another thing to actually do it yourself. Our association enjoys a membership of over one hundred but the men who are actually doing the work for the organization, using up time and energy for your benefit and mine are very small in number. They could be practically counted on one hand. So give them support, cooperation, and a willing hand. Let them do their work unmolested. They will prove their worth. And here's another idea while we are talking about it. Before making any motion in a business meeting— THINK. 1957 cial golf ball prize donated by Pro Ancy Doyle. Please return information requested promptly. Manny Francis states that you may bring as many as three of your officials to this meeting. A hasty poorly-worded motion many times unnecessarily delays procedure, and in the end often has to be withdrawn for a better one. A clear, concise, wise motion usually passes without alteration and saves time. Before making a motion therefore, think out the wording and ask yourself, is this best for the association. "Unreasonable error." haste is the direct road to Moliere The turnout was excellent for our first outdoor meeting of the season at the Woodland C. C. May 6th. There was a good audience waiting for the equipment demonstration and exhibition preceding the luncheon. On parade were the Atco Greens mower, The Greens Air Special, Toro Tractor and Fairway Mower, Ryan Sod Cutter, The Bunton Whirl Mower, and a Junior caterpillar powered by a 9 h.p. To sell yourself, your association and your job to the men of influence at your golf club. Most of these men are so busy with their own businesses they have no idea of the scope of the superintendents job and the complications involved. They are not aware of the importance of our association to them, the golf club and to you. For these men to mingle with our group at a meeting is usually an e y e opener. That is why it is important to influence your chairman to attend, and if he can't possibly be present try to get his representative, or his second, third and fourth choice among the directors. This special chairman's meeting was never intended to encourage the attendance of the best golfers from your club just because they are good golfers but more because they are officials and are in a position to be aided by our association, and in turn perhaps aid us. "It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." Shakespeare. H. DARLING, Editor
