N E W S GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS A S S O C I A T I O N OF N E W ENGLAND Warcli-1958 T h e March meeting of the Association was held at the Waltham Field Station. We had our usual fine luncheon. President Manuel Francis was not present as he had undergone an operation, but was reported to be progressing satisfactorily. VicePresident Narry Sperandio presided. Door prizes were won by Ed Buecher, Ed Murphy, John Con tiers, and Ray Brigham. There were 44 present. Bruce Vickery, Service Manager for the Connell Company spoke on the Briggs and Stratton light weight motors. After discussing parts and repairs, Mr. Vickery stressed that we should follow recommendations of the manufacturer in the use of all motors. It was pointed out that a good grade of regular gasoline should be used and that detergent oils should not be used. Gasoline should not be used if it has been stored in cans over 30 days in warm weather. T o o hot a plug will burn out the piston. Clean the oil bath air cleaner frequently. Light weight motors can be rebored. A word of caution, when you send a motor in to be serviced don't wash it or fill it with new oil. If you do it confuses the mechanic who will work on it and might cut down your chances on an adjustment if you had received a faulty motor. Ralph Reynolds of the International Mineral and Chemical Co. introduced a film which showed the mining of phosphate and potash, a fabulous operation which makes one wonder why these minerals are so reasonably priced. Tony Sperandio showed a film of some of our past meetings. T h e best of luck to Tony who now owns the Grounds Equipment Company. There was a spirited discussion on poa-annua but nothing new was brought out in the facts presented. Hope was expressed that research at the University of Massachusetts will be conducted under actual and not simulated playing conditions. We feel confident this is the plan of Dr. Elliot Roberts. Our deepest sympathy goes to Joe Dinardi on the recent loss of his wife. Plans are being made for a Ladies Day at New Bedford the first Monday in May. T h e Spring Turf Conference at the University of Massachusetts was everything we had hoped for. T h e speakers and slides were perfect. There were over 225 present. Dr. Roberts and the staff at the University should be congratulated for the fine arrangements and accommodations. The next meeting will be held M o n d a y , April 7 at the W a l t h a m Field Station Luncheon will be at 12:30 noon Dealers are again invited. This will be a dealers meeting, therefore no speaker.
