A committee of William Ash, Narry Sperandio, P h i l i p Cassidy and Michael 0'Gra<3y was appointed to draw up an appropriate l e t t e r on the matter of the r i p p l e sole type of shoe report by the U.S. Golf Association. The f e e l i n g of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England i s that the report was premature and inconclusive. I t was pointed out that the findings were not in agreement with a report in the Autumn, I j m Journal of the U.S.G.A. No one argues with the comf o r t of this type of footwear. The one s p e c i f i c objection to the ripple type sole i s that i t disturbs the grass of the putting surface to the extent that the surface i s not smooth, remains uneven f o r an extended period, and leaves markings and indentations obvious to even the most casual g o l f e r . Several Country clubs have banned this type shoe from the course. club has even incorporated t h i s ban in their By-laws. Our Association has received a , l e t t e r from the N. E. Professional Golfers Association stating t h e i r d e f i n i t e objections to this type sole shoe on the putting areas.
