GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION OF NEW ENGLAND N ewsleft JULY I 9 5 9 "There is no great achievement that is not the result of patient working and waiting" ..Holland. ^Two months ago the greens and tees on many golf courses in this State were a sad looking lot. It was a most discouraging situation even to the old and experienced Golf Course Superintendent. Thanks to the diligence, perserverance and patience of these specialists however these same greens and tees are today practically back to normal. The wounds and scars from Mother Nature's low blows have almost disappeared. Last week's cool drizzly weather was the final helping hand to put things back to normal. It seems as though the Golf Course Supt. has a constant battle with the elements. At all times he must reckon with the wind, sun, rain, cold and heat. It is quite obvious that he has to combine his own weather judgement with the meteorologists forecasts in order to be a successful turf manager. Most important he has to "Make hay while the sun shines" as it were, for tomorrow he may miss an opportunity with a change in weather. We in Mass. thought we were hard hit by the elementsWhat about the South Western Golf Course Supts.? They have just gone through a scorched earth period of no rain, low humidity, extremely high temperatures and high winds almost an impossibility to maintain good playing turf under such conditions. There x,ras no question about the weather for our June 8th meeting at the Blue Hill Golf Club. It was a perfect day for all events. Those who haven't visited this club for sometime were awed by the fabulous club house and surroundings. But leave it to the Golf Course Supts., they made themselves right at home. The equipment shoxtf and demonstration was a huge success, with an excellent display of new turf machines, thanks to the dealers who went to the trouble and expense of showing and demonstrating to us their latest. Following a delicious buffet luncheon in one of the many dining rooms at Blue Hill there was an 18 hole two ball best tourney for the Supt-Chairman and an 18 hole medal for the other players.
