GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS A S S O C I A T I O N OF N E W ENGLAND Newsletter March, 1959 The February meeting was attended by 65 interested members and guests. The list of door prize winners was lost, but we do recall Joe Dandurand of the Maynard Golf Club was number 1 on the "Hit" parade. Notes were compared on the highlights of the National Turf Conference and the concensus was that it gets bigger and better every year. Registration figures at Chicago showed a total of 1720 .— an all time high. We hope all our members are availing themselves of the clinics on irrigation and machinery being conducted by the Clapper Company and the Sawtelle Bros, respectively. Dr» John Havis pinch hit for Dr. Eliott Roberts at our meeting and outlined the purpose of the Mass. Turf and Lawn Grass Association, As you know, the Mass, Turf and Lawn Grass Association is the revived "Mass. Section of the N. E, Turf Assn." Until next March 5th at the Turf Conference at Amherst a temporary board of officers and directors will carry on specific duties to get the ball rolling. The purpose of the organization is to consolidate the efforts of all research and education in the field of turf and lawn grass within the state. The success of this organization is the responsibility of each one of us. We need it and it needs us, Mr, Ed. Kudrna, field representative of the Jacobsen Mfg. Co, gave an extremely interesting talk on the Jacobsen Power Greens Mower and particularly the function of its excellent 2-cycle motor. Specific points we remember are: Keep the oil bath clean, clean ports every 20-25 hours, make sure your gas-oil mixture is exact and clean, don't use a mixture that has been standing for a month or longer. Use #30 non-detergent oil, regular gasoline is good but don't use a cheap grade, Blue Sunoco does not work well in 2-cycle motors( Amoco high test is good but be sure your mix is right. Additives are of questionable benefit. It is dangerous to run your motors when the oil percentage of the mixture is lower than recommended. Use a UJ-12 spark plug (this is a jump-spark plug). Open the throttle at the end of a cut — most 2 cycle motors don't run hard enough to keep the ports clean and carburators from flooding when you are emptying your grass catchers. Drain all gas mix when storing. Lacquer Thinner will help clean gummed up carburators. Caution: Don't breathe fumes from Carbon-Tet — it is poison! A speaker on Public Relations is scheduled for the near future. We have received an acknowledgement from the U,S,G,A, of our letter objecting to their report favoring Ripple Sole type shoes on the golf course. Opinions expressed after the letter was read indicate that there was very little if any satisfaction from their letter as it was worded, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS A S S O C I A T I O N OF N E W ENGLAND M ewslefter -2Objection to this type sole on the golf course is snow-balling. At the National Conference several superintendents speaking on the program and not from New England, stated that the Ripple Type Sole is banned from their courses.
