My 1959 Another golf season is upon us and already we are up to our necks in the swift moving stream of problems. It's going to take some strong swimming too, to manage the current that this spring is forcing upon us. Strong hearts, patience and courage will be required. Its been 25 years since this area has experienced such a deep frost four feet. Most Superintendents have their fingers crossed hoping for the best but expecting the worst, Such severe cold, wind, and ice on snow free greens is sure to raise havoc with the turf as well as the water systems. Let's hope that things won't turn out quite as bad as they look at this writing. The April 6 meeting at the Waltham Field Station was full of activity and education. Following are brief notes on the doings at the morning business meeting. John B. Callahan, Supt. Green Meadow G. 0., Hudson, N.H. was voted an Associate membership. Applications for Associate membership were received and read from, Rolan D. Boulanger, Manchester C.C. Manchester, N. H. Nicholas F. Cammuso, Wachusett C.C, West Boylston, Mass. Tentative plans were discussed concerning a joint meeting of our Association with the Greens chairmen and A1 Radko, Director U.S.G.A. service section. Possible date June 6. A July or August meeting was suggested for New Hampshire. Manuel Francis, our retiring president, was presented a gavel with the thanks and appreciation of the Association for his untiring efforts and conscientious management of our group during his administration. President A1 Allen made the presentation with the appropriate words. Time did not permit starting a hearing on the revised By-Laws. A special meeting was agreed upon for April 13 to devote the entire meeting to the By-Laws. The educational program following the luncheon was an interesting one. Dick Silva, our new Educational Chairman introduced Geof. Cornish, at present an up and coming golf course architect, and Bob Miller, Chemical Dept. of the Dupont Company. Mr. Cornish's talk was accompanied by interesting color slides on golf course construction, selection of sites, water hole construction, land clearance, soil mixtures and even up to the minute pictures of bulldozer frost breaking attachments working during the past winter.
